Northshore High School, often abbreviated to NHS, "A Challenging and Caring Community, Encouraging Lifelong Learning for All Students", is a public school for grades nine through twelve located in Slidell, Louisiana that serves the eastern end of St. Tammany Parish as well as some residents of Slidell proper. [edit] History
Northshore High School was incorporated in 1982. It was the fourth high school to serve the Slidell area. At first, it was meant to serve 800 students, but since that time it has grown with the population of Slidell to a student body of about 1500. One recent major development was the completion of a new auditorium during the 2004-2005 school year. Prior to the auditorium's construction, the small stage in the school cafeteria was used for presentations, shows, etc. The first major use of the new auditorium was the Senior class of 2005's performance of Seussical.
Uniforms were adopted for Northshore High School students beginning with the 1999-2000 school year. It was the first public high school in St. Tammany Parish to adopt a uniform policy. The uniform policy has grown increasingly strict with time, especially with regard to student identification. Students must wear student IDs at all time, in addition to school uniforms. No warning is issued to students who are found without IDs, they are simply given an automatic detention.
During the period of late 2005, following Hurricane Katrina, until early 2006, the uniform policy was abandoned to ensure that students that had no access to any uniforms following the storm would have time to secure new ones.
During Katrina, Northshore High School was used as a shelter. Reopening on 3 October 2005, half-day classes were adopted for students so the facilities could be used in the afternoon for students of Salmen High School, which was destroyed during the storm. Full-day classes were reinstituted beginning 17 January 2006, when Salmen was able to move to the repaired St. Tammany Jr. High. In addition, free lunch was offered to all students of Northshore after Katrina until the end of November, 2005.
Following the reopening of NHS after Katrina in late 2005, the principal issued a statement regarding the condition of the school and the community:
Dear Parents, Students, and Community Friends,
The progress that our Northshore High School community has made since school reopened on October 3, has been nothing short of impressive. The school faculty, staff, administration and the PTA leadership have worked diligently to provide our students with the resources and quality instruction that make Northshore High School the school of academic choice. As this community continues to move forward, we will grow stronger and better for what we have overcome.
The circumstances are improving throughout our community, but for most of our families, the work that needs to be done seems endless. The long lines at the grocery stores, communication with contractors and insurance agents, traffic delays to just about anywhere, and the fatigue of working many hours after returning home from a full day on our regular jobs are experiences that can cause considerable stress. Many families are concerned about job security and housing needs. No one in our community has been spared from the influence of these circumstances. During this time of transition, I encourage you and your families to pay attention to the many situations that can cause stress and even depression. Not being aware of the true causes of stress and depression could mislead many to blame themselves or others for the negative feelings they may be experiencing. As a community, we must protect our families from the emotional and psychological impact caused by the changes we are experiencing. A positive attitude and a spirit of forgiveness toward yourself and others will give you the patience and endurance to overcome this time of transition.
Sincerely,
Michael R. Peterson, Ph.D.
