Northmont Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) was started at the beginning of the 1996 - 1997 school year and is currently one of 17 NJROTC units at high schools in Ohio. Currently the unit is run by Senior Naval Science Instructor Lt. Col. Kenneth Knotts and Naval Science Instructor Senior Chief James Griffin.

[edit] Early Years

In the beginning there were only 68 cadets divided between 5 class periods, cadets wore their uniforms each Wednesday to undergo the personnel inspection. The first instructors with over 20 years experience each in the Navy were Retired Lieutenant Ray Wysocki and Chief Jerry Hays. The first appearance to community was on October 4, 1996 as 15 color guard cadets presented colors at the Homecoming football game. The unit was originally in Area 4 and later moved into Area 9, since 2001 the unit has been in Area 3.[1]

Northmont NJROTC takes many trips including:

[edit] Area 3

While in Area 3, Northmont NJROTC has distinguished itself as one of the leading schools in the 7 state region.[2] The unit has won the Eastern Area 3 competition three years in a row and has competed at the Navy Nationals three years in a row placing in the top 20 of all NJROTC units in the country. The unit's academic team recently placed 8th in the nation on the Fleet Reserve Association exam ranking them amongst the top schools in the country. In 2005, the Color Guard placed 4th at Nationals, allowing Northmont to take home their first national trophy. The unit has also earned Distinguished Unit for the 2002, 2004, and 2005 school years, and Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors for the 2006 school year.
