From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Northlink Ferries operates daily ferries between the mainland Scotland and the northern island groups of Orkney and Shetland.
Northlink operate two routes:
- Scrabster to Stromness, Orkney (90 minutes)
- Aberdeen to Kirkwall, Orkney and Lerwick, Shetland (12 hours)
Currently the Northlink fleet includes:
- MV Hamnavoe, on the Scrabster route, 110m long
- MV Hjaltland and MV Hrossey, identical twins on the Aberdeen route, 125m long
- MV Hascosay, used for freight and livestock to Orkney and Shetland, sailing from Aberdeen
Due to the long sailing times of some of the routes, some ferries operate a wide range of facilities including cinemas and some live entertainment.
Northlink Ferries is a limited company owned by Scottish Ministers and took over the routes from P&O North Sea in the nineties.
