Northern Xiongnu

The Northern Xiongnu was established in 48 AD when Huduershi appointed his son Punu as the next Shanyu instead of Bi, king of the East. Bi then moved his portion of the Xiongnu into union with China and his people encouraged campaigns against their Northwestern cousins.

In 91 AD Hunnoi in the west are first mentioned by Tacitus as being near the Caspian Sea. This coincides exactly with Ban Chao (班超)'s campaign against the Northwestern Xiongnu.

A Northern Xiongnu Shanyu was responsible for driving Yufuluo and his Xiongnu tribes to seek refuge in Shanxi.
