Northern Russian dialects
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Northern Russian dialects are the dialects of a group of dialects of the Russian language.
Dialects of this group feature okanye and yekanye, i.e., the absence of vowel reduction in unstressed syllables. That is, о and е in unstressed positions are always read as IPA [o] and [je] respectively. Northern Russian dialects also are spoken in Finland. Many Russian dialects are within this group. This might be connected to the fact that the Arkhangelsk area was not settled by Russians in the middle ages.
