Northern Region, Manitoba

The Northern Region of Manitoba is situated on the Canadian Shield, and includes Manitoba's Hudson Bay coastline. The major economic activities are mining and tourism. The region is comprised of four of Statistics Canada's census divisions of Canada: Manitoba Census Divisions No. 19, No. 21, No. 22, and No. 23, which together had a land area of 438,491.51 km² (169,302.52 sq mi), the largest geographical region of Manitoba. Its total population as of the 2001 census was 82,427. The largest municipality is the city of Thompson. Other major population centres include the city of Flin Flon, and the town of The Pas. Indian reserves comprise more than 49 percent of the region's population. There are 54 of them with a total population of 40,572 as of the 2001 census. The largest of these are Norway House 17 and Peguis 1B. In addition, there are four Indian settlements, with a total population of 1,020.
