From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Northeast Mississippi Community College is a community college located in Booneville, Mississippi in the United States.

The college was founded in 1948 as Northeast Mississippi Junior College, and became known primarily as an agricultural high school and junior college. The agricultural high school status was dropped a year later. The name of the school changed again to its current form in 1987. It has extension centers located in New Albany and Corinth. Northeast Mississippi Community College's service area is made up of five counties: Alcorn, Prentiss, Tippah, Tishomingo, and Union. Over 6,000 students enroll each year.

The college's primary strength is its nursing program, which was started in 1978. According to the college's website, 2004's nursing program turned out a 96 percent success rate for graduates entering the profession.

The college employs a board of trustees which governs community college affairs, with members from each of the five service counties. The fifteen member board is made up of six members from Prentiss County and two each from the remaining four counties. The member-at-large position left over is rotated among those four counties. The college's current president is Dr. Johnny Allen.

[edit] Harold T. White

Mr. Harold T. White served as the school's President from 1970 until his death from a heart attack on August 26, 1987. He was influential in expanding the dormitories and overseeing integration. White Hall, the freshman men's dorm, is named after Mr. White.

Student Newspaper: The Beacon

The newspaper is overseen by Northeast's Office of Public Information, and is funded entirely by the school. In August 2005, the Beacon was converted to an online-only form due to budgetary setbacks.
