Northcliffe, Western Australia

Northcliffe is a town located in the lower south west of Western Australia in the Southern Forests region surrounded by towering karri and jarrah forest over which the community engages in ongoing debate. The various issues of conservation, environmental protection, economic gain, logging, tourism, public use, private use, cultural impact and old growth forest resource value are vigorously and intelligently confronted here. Northcliffe has a population of approximately 1000. Founded in 1923 with the Group Settlement Scheme the initial population was a mixture of English and European people. The town was named after Lord Northcliffe, the influential newspaper owner and Minister for Propaganda for the English government during WW1.
Internationally renowned artist Howard Taylor lived in Northcliffe for decades where he produced many important works. He is admired locally as a pragmatic disciplined man who, like many of the locals, kept to himself unless an issue arose which was close to his heart.
Today Northcliffe is a thriving community with an emphasis on cultural events.
