North and South is the sixth studio album by Gerry Rafferty. The album did not chart a well as some of his earlier albums, like City to City. Even though he had taken a break from music, similar to George Harrison and John Lennon, the album wasn't a "comeback." The album got fair reviews, but some of the songs drew criticism for having such long instrumental openings, which required Rafferty to edit the singles to get airplay, similar to Baker Street. Fans, though, thought the album was a true return to the City to City days, but Rafferty would never again release an album with the popularity of City to City. The album was released as an LP and CD in 1988. One of the singles was Shipyard Town, also released on several compilation albums.
