The North Yemen Civil War was a war fought between Royalists of the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen and Republican factions of the Yemen Arab Republic in North Yemen from 1962 to 1970. Eventually the Republican faction gained control of the government.
The Royalist side received support from Saudi Arabia, while the Republicans were supported by Egypt and The Soviet Union.
The Israeli historian Michael B. Oren wrote that Egypt's military adventure in Yemen was so disastrous that "the imminent Vietnam War could easily have been dubbed America's Yemen." (Oren 7) By 1967, 50,000 Egyptian troops were tied down in Yemen, including many of the most experienced, well-trained, and well-equipped units in the whole Egyptian Army. This severely hurt Egypt during the Six Day War with Israel in 1967
