North Kansas City is a city in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,714 at the 2000 census.

North Kansas City is located at GR1. It is independent from, but completely surrounded by, Kansas City, Missouri.
(39.139007, -94.570518)According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.3 km² (4.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (5.82%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 4,714 people, 2,546 households, and 1,013 families residing in the city. The population density was 417.5/km² (1,080.0/mi²). There were 2,779 housing units at an average density of 246.1/km² (636.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 82.48% White, 3.97% African American, 0.59% Native American, 4.29% Asian, 0.23% Pacific Islander, 3.31% from other races, and 5.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.44% of the population.
There were 2,546 households out of which 18.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 24.7% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 60.2% were non-families. 51.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.85 and the average family size was 2.77.
In the city the population was spread out with 18.0% under the age of 18, 12.7% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $28,674, and the median income for a family was $33,906. Males had a median income of $27,487 versus $26,591 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,967. About 10.6% of families and 12.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.7% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.

In 1883, Willard E. Winner came to the area with visionary plans of building a city and a bridge. He built a rock road that became Swift Avenue; he started constructing a bridge across the Missouri River; and he purchased land and laid subdivisions in town lots.
When a new city springs up, it usually has its beginning in the congregation of a number of people who create for themselves the habitations, business buildings, traffic ways and other conveniences necessary to urban existence. The city acquires a population first and its structural form later.
In North Kansas City, the industrial giant of Clay County, the order was reversed -- North Kansas City was well planned and built with homes, commercial houses, paved and lighted streets, a water works system and parks in advance of its inhabitants. The district was incorporated on November 4, 1912, as the Town of North Kansas City.

While 4,714 people reside in North Kansas City the working population is more than 20,000 persons. North Kansas City is home for over one thousand companies engaged in manufacturing, warehousing, transportation, wholesale and retail trade, and business and personal services. This strong and stable economic base keeps taxes low and municipal services high in quantity and quality.
Major businesses include: Harrah's North Kansas City Casino and Hotel, Cerner Corporation, North Kansas City Hospital, Burlington Northern Railroad, National Starch, Osco Drug, Rainen Business Interiors, Helzberg Diamonds, Jack Miller, ADM Milling & Processing, Prax-Air, Georgia-Pacific, Modine Manufacturing, Henry Wurst, Inc., Fujicolor Processing and Midland.

The opportunities abound, both within North Kansas City and within a short drive of north Kansas City. In North Kansas City,you'll find casino gaming, indoor tennis, bowling, billiards, miniature golf, live musical entertainment and dancing. And, the City's Parks and Recreation Department offers a host of activities and facilities including swimming, tennis, and picnicking.

North Kansas City may be geographically small, but it offers a big package of services. Fire and police protection rank among the best in Missouri and in the Kansas City metropolitan area, resulting in low property insurance rates for residents and businesses. The fire insurance rating in North Kansas City is 4. The City's fire department has 59 full-time personnel and the most modern equipment available. Emergency medical services are offered free to residents and businesses in North Kansas City. North Kansas City is also part of the metro area's 911 Emergency Call System.
North Kansas City has its own hospital, library and park system. Macken Park is a large, beautiful park with a walking trail, running track, picnic shelters, playgrounds, lighted tennis and handball courts, baseball fields, soccer fields and basketball courts. Dagg Park located near City Hall features picnic tables, children's playground, wading pool, and fountain. The North Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department offers an extensive list of programs and activities year-round.
The City cooperates with local merchants in providing area residents and workers with entertainment events like Northtown's Noontime Friday in the Park concerts, parades and special displays.
North Kansas City's newly expanded Library at 23rd and Howell has over 40,000 volumes and offers preschool and adult film programs weekly. Services include the loan of records, video tapes, films and art prints as well as an extensive business section. The library is also North Kansas City High School's Media Center.
North Kansas City Hospital, founded in 1958, is a primary acute care center. The 360-bed facility offers a full range of diagnostic, surgical, and rehabilitation services. The hospital's mental health division, and six story medical office complements medical care with complete health services.

North Kansas City has a Mayor/Council/City Administrator form of government. Two council members are elected to two year terms from each of the four wards. The current Council Members and the expiration of their current terms are listed below:

The mayor serves a four year term. The current mayor, Gene Bruns, was re-elected in 2005. Steve Fuller currently sits as Judge.
The work of officials and city staff is aided by dozens of community-minded residents and business people who voluntarily serve on boards, commissions and committees. They work together to provide the best possible services and programs.
The City government works closely with volunteer and civic associations to assist those who need support. The North Kansas City Resource Center, Ministerial Alliance, NKC Business Council, NKC Hospital Auxiliary and Meals on Wheels Program, and City employee participation in United Way drives are examples. Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, American Business Women, Soroptimist, Pilot's Clubs, the NKC Historical Committee, Kansas City Area Development Council and the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce and Clay County Economic Development Council are other examples of cooperation between governmental and non-governmental service agencies and organizations.

North Kansas City, just across the Missouri River from Downtown Kansas City, Missouri, is next door to Kansas City Downtown Airport. Just 20 minutes north is Kansas City International Airport. The Area Transportation Authority, which operates a metropolitan wide bus system, provides frequent, low cost service to all sections of North Kansas City. Industry enjoys easy access to rail or barge service.
