North Dakota United States Senate election, 1998

The 1998 U.S. Senate election for the state of North Dakota was held November 3, 1998. The incumbent, Dem-NPL Senator Byron Dorgan, sought and received re-election to his second term, defeating Republican candidate Donna Nalewaja, a state legislator. [1]
Only Dorgan filed as a Dem-NPLer, and the endorsed Republican candidate was Donna Nalewaja of Fargo, North Dakota, a state Senator for District 35. Nalewaja gave up her seat in 1998 when she was defeated, after serving for 16 years. Dorgan and Nalewaja won the primary elections for their respective parties.
One independent candidate, Harley McLain, also filed before the deadline. McLain had previously run for North Dakota's other senate seat in 1980 against incumbent Mark Andrews.
