North Dakota United States Senate election, 1986

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1986 U.S. Senate election for the state of North Dakota was held November 4, 1986. The incumbent, Republican Senator Mark Andrews, was challenged in his bid for re-election to his second term by Dem-NPL Tax Commissioner Kent Conrad. Conrad narrowly edged out Andrews by just over 2,000 votes after a rigorous campaign involving personal attacks and other strategies. [1]

Only Andrews filed as a Republican, and the endorsed Democratic-NPL candidate was Kent Conrad who had served as Tax Commissioner since 1980. Andrews and Conrad won the primary elections for their respective parties.

One independent candidate, Anna B. Bourgois, also filed before the deadline. Despite the fact that Bourgois received less than 4,000 votes, it is possible that her candidacy effected the outcome between Andrews and Conrad as Conrad's margin was just over 2,000 votes. Bourgois had previously run for North Dakota's other senate seat in 1982.
