The North Channel is the strait which separates Northern Ireland from Scotland. The deepest part is formed by Beaufort's Dyke. It connects the Irish Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. It is crossed by a large number of ferry services. It was the scene of a serious maritime disaster, the sinking of the ferry Princess Victoria in 1953.

Protestant Northern Ireland political leaders for decades lobbied the British government to construct a rail-link tunnel under the North Channel, the better to integrate the troubled province into the larger United Kingdom. The idea went nowhere.
