North Aral Sea

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The North Aral Sea is the portion of the original Aral Sea that is fed by the Syr Darya river. Two attempts to save the North Aral Sea from drying up by building a dike had failed due to lack of funding to construct it adequately. In 2005, the government of Kazakhstan finally succeeded in reconstructing the Dike Kokaral more robustly. Since then, water levels have risen faster than expected and fish stocks are presently increasing again.
