The movie was made by setting the observer to be at the exact geographic North Pole, which is on the axis of the planet; setting the view to lock on the Sun; setting the time to be at midnight on April 14, 2004 (early spring); setting the time step for animations to be one hour; and then using the Movie Tool to make a movie of the resulting sky views for twenty-odd frames to cover a period of just over one day.

As you can observe, the sun stays above the horizon in the view. Other simulations done by me show the sun rising in March and setting in September.

The image was made to resolve a dispute at Wikipedia:Reference desk.

Trees and direction markers in the foreground are artifacts of the way the program handles things. They do serve a useful purpose here, in that they show that this is taking place over one day.
