Nopaltepec is a municipality in México State, Mexico, bordered by the state of Hidalgo and by Axapusco. It's postal code is 55970.

According to legend, it was founded during the second Aztec Empire by Chimalpopoca, a god, during the reign of Netzahualcóyotl.

It was originally called "Santa María de la Asunción Nopaltepec" but after 1960 only Nopaltepec is used.

This municipality is 250 km to the west of state capital Toluca. Its population in 1995 was 5,997.
