[edit] A userbox you posted on my talk page

I have to say I really don't appreciate your posting this blatantly offensive and intentionally confrontational userbox on my talk page. While I wish that some administrators would place more emphasis on process, I still believe that they are doing what they think is best for the encyclopedia, and I would not resort to attacking them or referring to them as "overzealous Wikipedia cops"--I'd hope that you would do the same. I'd really prefer to stay out of the userbox debates altogether as I find them to be quite absurd and an incredible waste of time--I honestly wouldn't care if the whole lot got deleted or if every userbox was allowed to stay. If you take issue with the way that some articles and templates are deleted, then attacking every deletionist (a category into which I could arguably fall myself) is not the way to go about changing it. Please don't jump to conclusions about people and post similar attack boxes on their talk pages; it's not going to get you anywhere. AmiDaniel (talk) 23:27, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Excuse me from Noles1984
The userbox you received was an error. When reading a post in my talk section I thought you had stated you liked it and wanted it. It was not you, but another user! There was no attack on you. Simply delete the userbox as I am a fervent believer that one should be allowed to delete messages on talk pages that are in error. You sure went to a lot of trouble to shame me. Maybe too much. I hope you will accept the apology Thank you. Noles1984 13:37, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
(sticks foot in mouth) In that case, perhaps I should be the one apologizing--I immediately jumped to the conclusion that you had been mass-posting these on user talk pages without looking through your contribs to verify my unfounded belief (I had just become a victim of the good-faith cowstar spamming seconds earlier, so I was a little jumpy about the whole thing.) It was not my intention to "shame" you, and I'm sorry it came across as such, though I do still stand by my opinion that such userboxes are not the way to go about invoking a change. [edit] Hi

Hi, I was booted indefinetly for a week, and another admin allowed me to come back, as long as I promised not to deal with fair use again. So I will not be involved anymore with this. Good luck. Travb (talk) 17:54, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Graphics Question

Rebelguy, Shouldn't there be a limit on graphics as far as physical size or even bytes? I've run across a file that are for no purpose other than a userbox but was 1000 x 1000+, I've run across files that could drop in color value from 256 to 16 saving Wikipedia a lot of space. Are there no guidelines? Noles1984 18:42, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

There is a limit to the size of uploaded images; the software automatically prevents the upload of huge media files. Saving Wikipedia's space is, at the moment, of very minor concern, as there's plenty of disk space. If the image you're concerned with is of particular concern, bring it up on WP:IFD, but size is not an issue there either. As a rule of thumb, always try to upload the best quality and biggest images you can – do not scale them down. (Fair use images are the exception.) — Rebelguys2 talk 18:56, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Alma

Oh sorry. I just reverted it because it messed up the formatting. Can you do it again, but make sure it doesn't mess up anything? Hurricanehink (talk) 16:17, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Oh, ok. You can make your changes again, then. Hurricanehink (talk) 17:03, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Winnipeg Beach

Hi there. I noticed that when you changed the coordinates on the Winnipeg Beach article to the MapIt template you made a mistake with the actual coordinates. The coordinates were previously encoded as {{coor dms|50|30|21|N|96|58|27|W}}, this is in degrees, minutes, seconds format. The Mapit template uses the decimal format for coordinates. You simply put a decimal between the degrees and minutes to try to convert to decimal but this is not correct (ie. N 50 30 -> 50.30). The correct decimal conversion of N 50 30 is closer to 50.50, since 30 minutes is half of 60 total minutes.

There is a handy website that can convert between formats, http://boulter.com/gps/ Qutezuce 19:42, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unit conversion

Thank you for the positive message you left on my talk page. I've been using Google to take care of most unit conversions. Example 2500 acre to km^2. You then round the answer to the nearest whole number. Sometimes when the number is just about ½, I add ½. You can read more at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Units of measurement. --Midnightcomm 21:20, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Tallahassee Airport Opening02.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Tallahassee Airport Opening02.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 15:05, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Logos

Hello, thanks for the message on my talk page. I agree that some of Ed's actions are controversial, and I disagree with many of them. I'm not sure about the specific actions you are referring to. It would be helpful if you provide a diff to a specfic version.
You may wish to provide commentary at Wikipedia_talk:Logos#Clarification_on_use_of_sports_team_logos. However, one thing I am concerned about is the big banner you are using on the top of your User page and Talk page. I see you created Image:Noles1984.gif and you have stated that you released the copyright. However, you appear to have created it from one of the logos in Image:Florida State Combo Logo.png (or perhaps you found a different copy on FSU's website or somewhere else). Regardless of where you got it, the FSU logo appears to be copyrighted by FSU. Therefore, making a revised version of it is not allowable. They own the copyright to the original work. Unless I am misunderstanding something, that banner will definitely need to be removed from Wikipedia. Johntex\talk 15:57, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey. Discussion over recent fair use issues have struck a chord with a good number of editors. I don't really have anything original to contribute, and reiterating exisiting points would just be clutter in a needlessly antagonistic debate. Anyway, if you'll comb through my contributions, you'll actually see that I tend towards the "image Nazi" side (as I've been called so many times - we'll all assume that it's out of affection), though I certainly agree that the behavior of other "image Nazis" (again, I'll assume it's out of affection) are ridiculously hostile and unproductive at this point. Thanks for notifying me of the matter, though. Another point to add to Johntex's comment: You're going to need to take the FSU logo, 25px, out of your signature, as we never put fair use images on pages out of the main namespace. This rule is well-clarified in written polices and guidelines. If you leave it in, not only will it break our fair use policy, but it's going to mean more work for others to remove all of said images at a later date. Thanks. — Rebelguys2 talk 16:54, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Rebelguys, correct me if I'm wrong, but as the FSU image is a governmental picture, it's not fair use: It's public domain--governmental. I'll CC this to your talk page. SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 22:43, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Hello Swat, it is true the fact that works of US government employees made as part of their official duties are in the public domain. (Please see Work of the United States Government) However, I don't think this is a work of the US govt, is it? The law saying that US govt works are in the public domain is not binding upon other governments, not even the US states. I don't know who owns that logo - if it is the State of Florida, the Seminole nation, or some other entity. Whether or not it is in the public domain depends on who does own the image, and upon what the laws are relating to that entity. What I do know is that Image:Florida State Combo Logo.png is tagged as a copyrighted image. So, it is either mistagged, or it is copyrighted. If it is copyrighted, then it can't be used on a talk page, and that includes a modified version of it. Johntex\talk 23:04, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Left a response on rebelguys' page. SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 23:16, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
