NOLA Hurricane Fund

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NOLA Hurricane Fund is a 501(c)3 Public Charity begun by four Tulane University students in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

A group of college students displaced from Tulane last fall decided to take the semester off and start that fund. Whereas the short-term goal was to provide needed supplies to local EMTs in the immediate aftermath of Katrina, the group's long-term vision is to work to improve education in New Orleans.

The motto of the NOLA Hurricane Fund is "rescue, relief and rebuilding" and have raised over $110,000 designated for hurricane relief and clean-up efforts and the computer program. The founders of the organization adopted several displaced New Orleans families and are coordinating volunteer efforts of people around the country to raise money and more local efforts to clean up schools and houses. The operations of the NOLA Hurricane Fund have recently moved into their third phase: rebuilding.

The first major program of this phase is to provide technology access in the homes of low-income New Orleans students, along with the skills necessary to make the most of that access. The program will run in 8 week sessions, twice a week. Students will start by learning the basics of MS Word and Excel, and by the end they will even know how to design their own web pages. The best part: when they graduate from the program, they get to keep the computer that they had been using!

The technology center will be staffed primarily by college student volunteers, including those from Tulane along with visiting volunteers from around the country. The NOLA Hurricane Fund will provide a place for New Orleans public school students to go after school, provide an advanced level of computer knowledge, and give the Public school students their own computers at the completion of the program. The location for the new technology center is 5625 Loyola Avenue/ New Orleans, LA 70115. The program should begin this March.
