Noel Hypothesis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Sociologist Donald Noel identifies three features of the contact situation that in combination lead to some form of inequality between [social] groups. The Noel Hypothesis states: If two or more groups come together in a contact situation characterized by ethnocentrism, competition, and a differential in [political or military] power, then some form of racial or ethnic stratification will result. If the contact situation has all three characteristics, some dominant-minority group structure will be created." (Healy, 2005)
