[edit] Chart success
"Nobody's Home", was weaker than her earlier singles. The song was so very close reaching the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 only charting at #41, and had moderate success in Australia and the United Kingdom, both charting at #24. However it was a huge success in Mexico becoming #1.

[edit] Song meaning
The song is thought to have three meanings. Avril Lavigne often says, before performing the song live, that she wrote the song about an old classmate who fell ill.
The general meaning of the song is about overall poverty. It tells a story of how a girl goes to her home and no one is there, and she cries as she lives on the streets. The second meaning is that the girl goes to her home and realizes that her family, friends and the people she cares about are no longer there for her.
The lyrics She wants to go home, but nobody's home are perhaps personifications (somewhat) of how sometimes parents who are, to an extreme point, over-protective and downright archaic, might kick out their child from the house after doing something disgraceful; dropping out of school, taking drugs daily, under-age sex or even pre-mature pregnancy.
Some believe the song was written about Amy Lee, the lead singer of Evanescence, the band co-writer Ben Moody belonged to. This, however, has not been proven and is probably not the case as Avril and Amy Lee weren't classmates.
However, the music video follows the poverty theme, although it may be noted that the second meaning could be inferred to in the video: there is a scene where the homeless Avril makes a phone call and is answered by an old lady; since we don't hear either the woman or Avril make a comment, it might have simply been a wrong number.
