No shit, Sherlock

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"No shit, Sherlock" was a common expression in the late 20th century[citation needed] referring to the brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes in the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The statement is usually jokingly directed at someone who makes an utterly obvious statement, by sarcastically invoking the name of a detective who makes brilliant deductions. A somewhat common retort is "Keep looking, Watson", "Keep digging, Watson" or the more humorous "Check the toilet, Watson".[citation needed]

Today, it is still used frequently on Internet forums, image macros and during instant messaging.
