No More AOL CDs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No More AOL CDs is a web-based effort by two IT workers [1] to collect one million AOL CDs. Such discs are commonly sent in the mail or offered in businesses such as Wal-Mart and Barnes & Noble. The website was started in August 2001. As of October 2006, an estimated 400,000 AOL CDs have been collected.[2]
Once the goal is reached, the discs will be returned to AOL in an attempt to "end this wasteful practice while sharing a laugh or two".[2] A BusinessWeek report from July 2006[3] identified another factor which could help to end the practice: AOL appears poised to cutting back on its marketing and branding budget as part of a restructuring designed to move the company from a dependence upon subscribers to a dependence on advertising revenue.
The effort can be seen as an alternative to AOL disk collecting. It may also be unnecessary as AOL ceased CD distribution as of August, 2006.
