No Alternative is regarded as the definitive alternative rock compilation of 1993, receiving a rating of A+ from Entertainment Weekly. This compilation album features original tracks and cover versions from bands who went on to define the alternative rock scene of the 1990s.
A television special hosted by MTV and home video featured live performances, music videos, and information about AIDS for an audience otherwise untargeted by other AIDS organizations.
It was Kurt Cobain's decision for "Sappy" to remain uncredited on No Alternative, for fear of distracting from the other bands on the compilation.
