The no. M-3 line is a bus line operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore, Maryland, and its suburbs. It currently runs from the Milford Mill Metro Subway Station in Pikesville, Maryland to the intersection of Cumberland and Carey Streets near the Penn-North Metro Subway Station that also serves as a layover for the No. 21 Line. All buses headed to this location are marked PENN-NORTH. The line currently operates every 10-15 minutes during rush hour, every 20 minutes midday, every 15 minutes on weekends, and every 22 minutes during the evening after 8 PM. The line serves the communities of Park Heights, Pimlico, and Mondawmin.

[edit] Origin

The no. M-3 line started operating in 1984 after the opening of the Baltimore Metro between the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station and the intersection of [Maryland Route 129|Park Heights]] and Slade Avenues, looping via Slade, Reisterstown Road, and Seven Mile Lane. At that time, it replaced a portion of the no. 5 line that served Park Heights Avenue on weekdays and Saturdays, and was branded as one of the Metro Connection Routes.

A year later, in 1985, the line was extended south to the Penn-North Metro Station.

In 1987, with the extension of the Metro to Owings Mills, the line was extended to the Milford Mill Metro Subway Station. The line has followed the exact routing since that day, with the exception of a few years during the 1990s, when selected trips served the Greenhill Apartments in Lower Park Heights. The no. 97 Mondawmin Shuttle has since taken over this function.

[edit] Planned Improvement

In 2006, MTA announced that the no. M-3 line would be combined with the no. M-8 line, and alternating trips would be extended to Randallstown via Milford Mill Road, Church Lane, Rolling Road, and Liberty Road. This change would bring improved connections between different bus lines, single-seat service between points along the two routes, and improved frequency of weekday service on the no. M-3 line. Originally schedule to take place on June 11, 2006, this proposal has been put on hold pending political approval.

Currently, on weekends, the nos. M-3 and M-8 lines switch off buses on selected trips, allowing single-seat service at certain times along the entire route of both lines.
