No. M-12 line

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article describes a former bus line of the Maryland Transit Administration. Information provided here is derived from old schedules and other archived resources.

The no. M-12 line was a bus line operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland between 1987 and 2005. The line originated from the Milford Mill Metro Subway Station, and operated to various locations in the area of Stevenson, Maryland.

When the no. M-12 line began operating, it was essentially a three-branch line. Most of its trips operated to Halcyon Gate, an upscale community off of Stevenson Road in Pikesville, Maryland. There were two other branches: one that operated to Greenwood, a small neighborhood in Lutherville, Maryland, and the other to Caves Road in Owings Mills, Maryland. The Greenwood branch served Villa Julie College, and the Caves Road branch had the least service.

As the line served a series of upper class communities, residents along its route were generally owners of vehicles, and did not need a bus line for themselves. The line's ridership was primarily composed of domestic workers of the wealthy homeowners and Villa Julie students.

[edit] Cutbacks

In 1992, MTA announced that the no. M-12 line would be eliminated. At that time, MTA started that the line carried 371 daily riders, and had a very low farebox recovery rate. Riders of the line held a petition drive to help keep their service running. As a result, MTA did not totally eliminate the no. M-12 line, but rather reduced the number of trips by two-thirds. Trips operating only as far as Halcyon Gate were completely eliminated, and trips to Greenwood and Caves Road operated via Halcyon Gate.

[edit] Revised M-12

On February 1, 1993, MTA started operating the no. M-12 line on a massively reduced schedule. Only eight round trips operated daily, and on weekdays only. Out of those eight trips, six of them operated to Greenwood. Trips during AM hours to Greenwood and PM hours from Greenwood operated via Winterset, Halcyon Gate, and Villa Julie College. Reverse trips did not.

The number of trips to Caves Road was reduced from three to two. These trips at first operated via Halcyon Gate, but a few years later, they did not.

The last trip on weekdays leaving the Milford Mill Metro Subway Station was at 3:30 PM.

The line operated this number of trips for more than 12 years.

[edit] Total Elimination

In 2005, MTA announced that the no. M-12 line would be completely eliminated. According to the agency, the line required a $9.41 taxpayer subsidy for each boarding, which was not economically practical.

There was much public outcry about these reductions. MTA decided to eliminate the line, despite these protests. However, the no. M-10 line, which had a northern terminus at Greenspring Station about one mile east of Villa Julie College, was extended to Villa Julie during peak hours. No service was provided to the Stevenson Road area at any time, or to Caves Road.
