[edit] Origin

The no. 64 line started operating in 1977 after a line known as the no. 6 line was split into several other lines. The no. 6 line had operated crosstown out of south Baltimore, with branches to Roland Park and East Monument Street. The no. 6 line was split into the following four routes:

  • No. 61 Line: Roland Park to Inner Harbor
  • No. 62 Line: East Monument Street to Inner Harbor
  • No. 63 Line: Riviera Beach to North Avenue
  • No. 64 Line: Wagner's Point to North Avenue

[edit] Expansions and Reductions

Over the years, the no. 64 line has been modified on several occasions. Mostly, branches have been added and removed.

In 1993, the Davison Chemical branch was eliminated due to low ridership. Selected trips to Linthicum were also eliminated, but were provided on the No. 63 Line.

In 1996, a new branch to Energy Parkway and Riviera Beach was added after the line was combined with the No. 63 Line.

In 2003, the line was shortened to Curtis Bay. Service between Curtis Bay and Wagner's Point was provided on a new No. 65 Line, which operated between the Patapsco Light Rail Stop and Wagner's Point. The no. 65 line was eliminated in 2005 due to low ridership.

[edit] Planned Overhaul

In 2005, as part of the Greater Baltimore Bus Initiative (GBBI), it was proposed that the no. 64 line would be combined with a portion of the No. 27 Line, and extended north to Mt. Washington, which would provided improved crosstown service. In addition, the line would only operate as far south as Energy Parkway, without service to Riviera Beach. This plan, which is still in the proposal stage, has been delayed due to a chain reaction resulting from public outcry about changes planned to various other lines.
