[edit] Origin

The no. 61 line started operating in 1977 after a line known as the no. 6 line was split into several other lines. The no. 6 line had operated crosstown out of south Baltimore, with branches to Roland Park and East Monument Street. The no. 6 line was split into the following four routes:

  • No. 61 Line: Roland Park to Inner Harbor
  • No. 62 Line: East Monument Street to Inner Harbor
  • No. 63 Line: Riviera Beach to North Avenue
  • No. 64 Line: Wagner's Point to North Avenue

The no. 61 line has been following this general route ever since.

[edit] Expansions and Reductions

Over the years, the no. 61 line has seen attempts to improve ridership, which has always been very low except for students.

In 1992, selected trips on the line were extended to the Mt. Washington Light Rail Stop. These trips operated via Northern Parkway, Falls Road, and Kelly Avenue, and included all midday service.

In 1993, weekend service on this line was discontinued due to low ridership. For a short period of time thereafter, a private contractor ran bus service along this route on weekends.

In 1995, service to Mt. Washington was discontinued, and all trips resumed operation to Roland & Lake.

[edit] Overhaul

In 2005, as part of the Greater Baltimore Bus Initiative (GBBI), it was proposed that the no. 61 line would be completely eliminated, and no bus service would be provided on Roland Avenue. Riders would be directed to walk from other bus lines.

The plan to eliminate bus service on Roland Avenue was not met easily. Due to a public outcry, this plan was put on hold.

It is currently proposed that the No. 11 Line will provide peak hour service to Roland Avenue. The remainder of the no. 11 route is very similar to that of no. 61. There would be no midday or evening service.
