No. 29 Line

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article describes a bus line of the Maryland Transit Administration. Information provided here is derived from old schedules and other archived resources.

The no. 29 line is a bus line operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore, Maryland. It currently runs in circular fashion from the Cherry Hill Light Rail Stop, taking a long route through the various working class neighborhoods of South Baltimore's Cherry Hill community that involves many deviations, and returns via a more direct route to the Cherry Hill Light Rail Stop. The line operates as a shuttle, providing service every 20 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays. Less frequent service along its route is also currently provided by the nos. 27 and 51 lines.

[edit] History

The no. 29 line started operating in 1993 in conjunction with the opening of the Central Light Rail to South Baltimore. The line was a split-off from the no-longer-existent no. 28 line. Prior to this time, the Cherry Hill area was served primarily by the no. 28 line, which linked North and South Baltimore through downtown. But with the rail line's opening, the bus routes in its vicinity were modified to link surrounding communities to its stations rather than across town.

The no. 28 line at that time was split into three routes. The new no. 28 line was shortened not to operate south of Waterview Avenue during the rail's hours of operation. The new no. 29 line operated between the Cherry Hill and Patapsco Light Rail Stops via the Cherry Hill communities and Brooklyn. And the new no. 30 line (now a part of the no. 51 line) operated between the Cherry Hill Light Rail Stop and Baltimore Highlands via the Mt. Winans community.

In 2002, as a cost-saving measure, the no. 29 line was modified from a bi-directional route to a circular route. Rather than using three buses for its regular service, it now used a single bus. The overall frequency of service was reduced from 15 to 20 minutes. In addition, the no. 51 line, which provided selected trips to Cherry Hill, was extended to the Patapsco Light Rail Stop to cover the portion of the route along Patapsco Avenue.

[edit] Future of no. 29 line

It is proposed that later in 2007, the no. 29 line will once again be a bi-directional route. It'll be extended to Port Covington, replacing a portion of the no. 27 line scheduled to be discontinued. Intervals will be reduced to 30 minutes except during rush hour, when they will be 15 minutes. Sunday service will be provided. In addition, service will be supplemented by the new no. 37 line, which will operate to Northeast Baltimore.
