The no. 21 line is a bus line operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore, Maryland. It currently runs from the intersection of Cumberland & Carey Streets near the Penn-North Metro Subway Station to Fells Point, serving the communities of Sandtown-Winchester, Mt. Royal, and Butcher's Hill. It is the most unchanged route dating back to Baltimore's streetcar history.

[edit] Origin

The no. 21 line starting operating in 1895 as a streetcar line between Preston and Caroline Streets. In 1938, the line was converted to a rubber tire bus service.

In 1957, the line was extended along Carey Street to the current loop at Cumberland & Carey Streets. Since then, the line has undergone no changes.

[edit] Overhaul

In 2005, as part of the Greater Baltimore Bus Initiative (GBBI), the no. 21 line was one of just six local bus lines for which no changes in route or schedule had been planned, leaving the line as it had been in its entire 110-year history. To this date, it still remains one of just three lines in the system for which no change plans of any type have either been made or suggested.
