No. 16 Line

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article describes a bus line of the Maryland Transit Administration. Information provided here is derived from old schedules and other archived resources.

The no. 16 line is a bus line operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore, Maryland. It currently runs from the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station Northwest Baltimore to Brooklyn Homes in South Baltimore. Service is provided once every 15 minutes during rush hour, every 30 minutes midday and on Saturday, and hourly on Sunday. The line operates through the Rosemont community, serving Coppin State College, and then along the Hilton Street/Caton Avenue corridor until it reaches Patapsco Avenue and operated via the light rail stop by the same name. Its final destination is Brooklyn Homes in South Baltimore's Brooklyn area. Additionally, rush hour service operates via Violetville Industrial Park. The total length of a full trip is approximately one hour.

The no. 16 line started operating in 2000 as a split-off from the no. 22 line. Previously, the no. 22 line was a very long route that had only selected trips operating along the current no. 16 line's route. Due to the length, and confusion among riders, MTA officials decided that no. 16 service should be provided on a separate line.

When no. 16 service began, rush hour service operated every 30 minutes, and service at all other times was provided hourly. Sunday service, which was provided on day one, had not been provided by the no. 22 line when it served the same route.

In 2005, MTA proposed not only to double the frequency of the line, but to modify its route in the Rosemont area to serve the Poplar Grove area. After riders complained that the new route would not serve Coppin State College, a slight change was made to this modification. To this day, the route of the no. 16 line is yet to have changed, but in October 2006, the frequency was doubled as planned (except on Sundays).
