No. 14 Line

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article describes a bus line of the Maryland Transit Administration. Information provided here is derived from old schedules and other archived resources.

The no. 14 line is a bus line operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland and to the city of Annapolis. It currently runs from the Patapsco Light Rail Stop to the vicinity of the State Capitol in Annapolis. Service is provided about once every 15 minutes during rush hour, every 30 minutes midday, hourly on Saturday, and every 90 minutes on Sunday. The line serves the intermediate communities of Glen Burnie, Pasadena, Severna Park, and Arnold. The line stops at or near the Cromwell Station Light Rail Stop, Marley Station Mall, Baltimore-Washington Medical Center (former known as Arundel Medical Center), the U.S. Naval Academy, and Anne Arundel Community College. In addition, selected trips serve Baymeadow Industrial Park and Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard in Pasadena. On weekdays, selected trips make short turns at Jumper's Hole Road. The no. 14 line operates to the southern-most point of any non-commuter MTA bus line.

The no. 14 line started operating in 1973 between downtown Baltimore and Annapolis, mostly along the same route as today, but without some of its current deviations.

[edit] Changes into a Feeder Bus

With the opening of the Central Light Rail Line into South Baltimore, the no. 14 line faced a series of changes, and became a feeder line into the light rail stops. Service between Patapsco Avenue and downtown was eliminated except during hours in which the light rail was not operating.

The original plan was for the line to be split into two lines. The no. 14 line was supposed to operate between the Patapsco and Cromwell light rail stops, and a new no. 41 line from Cromwell to Annapolis. But MTA ultimately decided to keep the no. 14 line as a single route.

In 1992, routing was changed to Patapsco, and service to all points north during light rail hours was permanently eliminated. Service south of Jumpers Hole to Annapolis was improved.

In 1993, a new deviation was added to serve the Cromwell Light Rail Stop. During the same year, midday service was increased from one bus every 40 minutes to one every 30. As a result of this frequency increase, only alternating trips traveled to Annapolis.

[edit] Split proposal

In 2005, MTA proposed for the second time to split the no. 14 line into two separate lines. The no. 14 line was supposed to operate from Patapsco to Jumper's Hole, and a new no. 41 line from Cromwell to Annapolis. The no. 41 line was proposed to have a much lower level of service than is currently provided, with one bus every hour during rush hour, and every two hours middays and on Saturdays. There was no Sunday service planned.

Public outcry resulted in the plan for the no. 14 line being delayed. To this date, no changes have been made to the current route of the no. 14 line.
