nLite and vLite are freeware applications used to create customized installation CDs of Microsoft's Windows XP, 2000, 2003, and Vista.

Once nLite is installed, Microsoft .NET Framework or Framework Lite (which is an unofficial runtime for windows) is required. To begin the process a Windows 2000 or XP installation CD (or preexisting files) and a folder location for copying files to build Windows installation images are needed. Note: Windows ME/98 operating systems are not supported.

Once the target windows setup files are identified nLite offers several tweaking options - slipstream (pre-install) service packs, security patches, device drivers, removing unwanted programs that can't be uninstalled with windows' default configuration such as Internet Explorer, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Media Player.

Due to the hundreds of options nLite provides many of the critical operating system functions and drivers are highlighted in red to aid the user. Some of the customization choices available to the user include: disabling and or removing of windows services and components, start menu alterations, hardware support and or driver removal, custom themes usage and, drastic reduction of windows installation time.

nLite gives the user the option to save the altered installation files, create an ISO image of the files, or burn the files directly to optical media.
