Niulakita
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Niulakita is the southernmost isle of Tuvalu, and the name of the only vilage on this island. It was bought by the UK in the mid-1900s to decrease the population density, and has a population (2002 census) of 35. There are four ponds or lakes and the village which has a maneapa (a village hall (or community hall) in Tuvalu, it is on each isle, and has also meeting and recreational functions). The isle has the form of an egg (horizontally) and a length of about 1 km. The island was claimed by the United States in the 1800s and ceeded in 1983.
