Nito Alves

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nito Alves was a member of the MPLA and commander of the special forces during the war for liberation, as well as Minister of Internal Administration under the presidency of Agostinho Neto in Angola.

He is alleged to have attempted a coup d'etat on May 27th, 1977 which failed. However, there is still a great deal of disagreement over this event. When Nito Alves was captured several weeks after the event took place, he was summarily executed under the orders of the then president Agostinho Neto. His death followed the executions of Jose Van Dunen and Sita Valles who are widely viewed as the political brains behind the Nitist grouping.

Thousands - some say as many as 50,000 - people were killed in the purge which followed the events of the 27th May. There has been no judicial process.
