NITIE ("National Institute of Industrial Engineering") is one of the premier institutes of management education in India. It has been given the status of an 'Institute of National Importance'. It is rated as the best school for Logistics and Operations Management in Asia as well as ranking amongst the finest schools for Supply Chain Management in the world. Situated between two freshwater lakes in India's de facto commercial capital, Mumbai, NITIE has one of the most beautiful campuses in India. NITIE was started with a grant from the UNDP and ILO. It is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. It is rated along with IITs and IIMs in reputation. NITIE has consistently been rated among the top ten management schools in India.

NITIE was established in 1962 by the Government of India with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) through the International Labour Organization. The institution boasts of many famous alumni who have passed out of the institution in its four decades.

The vision of the institute is to build up indigenous capabilities and competence in the technology management interface.
NITIE's aim to be an institute that facilitates advancement in every aspect of economic functioning in the country with an eye on the future.Organizational vehicles and models of economic activities currently being developed is reflected in its mission statement:
- To flourish as a national institute of the highest standards of competence comparable to the major industrial engineering institutions of the world in line with the vision.
- To become an apex center par excellence in education, research, training and consultancy in
techno managerial interface.
- To conduct academic activities in interface engineering/management.
- To lead the technology of the industry by exploring and designing viable organization and business models of the future.
- To innovate, assimilate and adapt the latest technological advances and developments to meet
the changing national requirements and make it percolate in all sectors of the economy to improve the standard of living and quality of life of the people.

NITIE is engaged in applied research and offers consultancy in various facets of management. In addition it conducts sponsored research and organizes seminars and conferences in varied areas of interest. NITIE’s publications appear in its two quarterlies: NITIE News and Udyog Pragati, which are widely subscribed to across the spectra of professional, students and researchers.

- NITIE during its inaugural years was used extensively for Operation Research and related studies. This also included Special defence forces that were nominated from the UN directly.
- All the facilities that are available inside NITIE have been designed keeping in mind the needs of international students and delegates. This can be observed in the unique kind of Hostel and washroom arrangement that is found in the hostels of this institution which is very much unique compared to those found in any other government run institute India.
- The institute in its initial days was spread across the country with knowledge centres situated at Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi. These institutes were known for their extensive research and consulting engagements in the area of Operation Research, Logistics and Labour Management. But gradually during the late 80s all of these nodal centres were shutdown and a single centre was groomed which is currently located at Mumbai.
- The moto of NITIE stands as Udhyog Pragati(Hindi) which when translated stands for "Nurturing Industry towards Excellence".
