Nirodh (the nearest meaning in being prevention, in Hindi) is the a brand name of condom sold in India under Department of Family Welfare of the central government.

Condoms are made available to the potential users by Government of India through the following schemes:

  1. Free Distribution Scheme
  2. Social Marketing Scheme
  3. Free disbursement of condoms was started with the objective of making them available to those who cannot afford to pay for it.

Under this Scheme, Department of Family Welfare procures condoms with brand name Nirodh from various Indian Manufacturers and supply them to all the States/Union Territories for distribution to the users free of cost through dispensaries, hospitals, Primary Health Centres, sub-centres etc.

Social Marketing Programme of condom was launched by the Government of India in 1968 with the objective of making condoms available to those who can afford to pay nominally for it.

Under this scheme, three different varieties are available:

  1. New Lubricated Nirodh,
  2. Deluxe Nirodh
  3. Super Deluxe Nirodh

These are procured from the indigenous condom manufacturers and supplied to marketing companies/NGOs (called Social Marketing Organizations) at subsidised rates for sale in the open market . In addition, distributing companies i.e. SMOs are permitted to market condoms under their own brand name.

A promotional incentive of 10 paise per condom sold for Deluxe and Super Deluxe varieties and 3 paise per condom sold for New Lubricated variety is also being provided to the SMOs. Deluxe Nirodh is also sold by State AIDS Control Societies through their NGOs network.
