[edit] Before the Scouring
Nils and Ninian are half-dragons, offspring from a dragon-human marriage that occurred before the Scouring, a war between humans and dragons fought across Elibe. Their human father was Nergal, at the time a benevolent and wise shaman prodigy, and their mother was Ninis, a female ice dragon who lived in the mountains of Ilia and was very well-loved by the people there.
During the Scouring, Ninis was kidnapped and taken away from her family. Nergal decided to go search for her, but he couldn't do so with their infant children in tow; he left them in a small house in Valor and near to the Dragon's Gate, telling them to hide and wait for him until he returned with their mother. However, he had also asked them to pass through the Dragon's Gate if he never returned.
After waiting for a substantial amount of time, Nils and Ninian decided to join the surviving dragons who left Elibe through the Gate, switching to their dragon forms and progressively losing much of their memories; some of those regarding Ninis remained, since Ninian kept a silver ring that belonged to her. Finally, after a long travel, they reached an alternate world where they could live in peace and build a new home along with the other dragons.
[edit] Their return
Ninian became a dragon priestess, taking care of their side of the Dragon's Gate with Nils' help. For many years they lived in harmony, until one day, both siblings heard a voice calling through the Gate.
Nils and Ninian left their posts and returned to Elibe through the Dragon's Gate, but they were so weakened by the travel that they took up their original human forms and placed their quintessence in a precious stone they called the Dragonstone. Few after that, they were captured by Nergal, their own father, who wasn't able to recognize his own children after how much he had changed through countless centuries. He took the Dragonstone and kept the siblings as hostages as he and the Black Fang, a notable group of assassins, gathered even more quintessence to fully open the Gate and summon more dragons.
[edit] Lyndis' Legion and Elbert
The siblings escaped, and disguised as a bard and a dancer they traveled through Elibe, with the Black Fang and Nergal hot on their trail. It was approximately around this time when Lyndis' Legion took Nils in and rescued Ninian with Eliwood's help, and then admitted the siblings as members of the Legion; since Ninian had been injured by the Black Fang, she mostly served as a fotrune-teller while Nils took up a more active role, using his dragon powers to support his companions during battles. However, they never mentioned their trials to Lyn, fearing that she'd become another target of the Black Fang.
After Lyndis' reunion with Lord Hausen, the siblings left Caelin, only to be re-captured by Nergal and taken to Valor. There, they met another of Nergal's hostages, Eliwood's father Elbert. He dissuaded the siblings from committing suicide, telling them about the human world and his family in Pherae, and ultimately helped them to flee in a small boat. During their escape, a storm hit the Dread Isle and Nils was thrown overboard. An amnesiac Ninian was rescued by Eliwood's troupe, who was traveling to Valor in Fargus' boat.
Unaware of the sibling's ordeals, Eliwood's group took Ninian in and continued their advance to the Dragon's Gate. Ephidel, Nergal's right hand, appeared and kidnapped Ninian. Nergal used his magic to brainwash Ninian and force her to open the Gate, summoning a fire dragon through it.
At that moment, Eliwood arrived and found not only Ninian and Nergal, but also his father in a weakened state. Nils, who had survived his ordeal, brought his sister back to her senses. Ninian attempted to close the Gate and succeeded, not without killing both the Dragon and Ephidel as she did so. Lord Elbert used his last bits of strength to seriously injure Nergal, but died in Eliwood's arms.
[edit] Eliwood's Elite
Ninian heavily blamed herself for Elbert's death, therefore she decided to join Eliwood's troupe as an atonement. Nils objected, but seeing that she was determined to prove herself as a member of the group, he transferred a part of his own dragon power to his sister, giving her partial strength back. From then on, Ninian took up a role similar to the one her brother had in Lyndis' Legion, dancing for the members to replenish their energies and bless them with the power of her magical rings as they fought the Black Fang.
At one point though, right after the deaths of the Reed brothers, a fully-healed Nergal came to stake his claim. Ninian struck a deal with Nergal: she'd go with him, but then Nergal would give up pursuing Nils. Nergal accepts and Ninian entrusts Nils and her magic rings to Eliwood's care before going.
[edit] Ninian's decision and death
In the Dragon's Gate, Nergal sees that Ninian's true intention was to start in-fighting and not to open the Gate, therefore he used his magic to force her switch to her dragon form. Completely disoriented and only able to remember Eliwood because of her love for him, Ninian fled to search for him... and ended up slain by Eliwood himself.
Ninian used her last bits of strength to revert to her human form, and died in Eliwood's arms, begging him to fight on and protect Elibe. The archsage Athos, Nergal's old companion and one of the few Eight Legends of the Scouring who still lived, attacked Nergal in rage, but Nergal was too powerful, and easily fended off Athos' attack. Nergal then left for the Dread Isle. Nils, who had been in a trance similar to the way Ninian was in in the Dragon's Gate, recovered and screamed in agony upon seeing his older sister dead.
[edit] Aftermath
After Ninian's death, Nils spends several days in a delirious state, and later borderline catatonic. However, he manages to recover and fully joins Eliwood's elite for the last battles, saying that he had now to do Ninian's part as well. He told Eliwood his and Ninian's story, also, explaining why the Black Fang wanted him and Ninian, and later he asks Eliwood to protect Elibe just like Ninian did.
After Nergal is slain, the Dragon's Gate is fully open, and three ancient Fire dragons attack them. The Sage Brammimond, the other remaining legend, takes the Dragonstone and uses it as a last resort, reviving Ninian. She uses her ice powers to kill two of the dragons and injure the other, letting Eliwood's group slay it.
When the battle ends, Ninian and Nils tell Eliwood, Lyndis and Hector that much as they love Elibe, they must return to their world and seal the Dragon's Gate forever. Eliwood is crushed by this revelation, but accepts it and the lords say good-bye to the siblings as they pass through the gate and permanently seal it. It's not known what happened to Nils and Ninian after this, but it's assumed that they went back to the temple and Ninian retook her place as dragon priestess.
[edit] Ninian and Eliwood's alternate ending
Ninian must acquire an A support ranking with Eliwood in order to achieve this altered ending.
After their talk with Eliwood, Nils notices that Ninian is reluctant to leave, so he offers to go alone and allow Ninian to live in Elibe. He warns her that her lifespan will be dramatically reduced since she won't have her dragon powers anymore, and Ninian says that despite this, she'll do her best to live a brief yet happy life in Elibe. Eliwood vows to protect and make Ninian happy, and then Nils says goodbye to his sister and brother-in-law and passes through the Gate alone. Eliwood tells Ninian to marry him and live her last years by his side, Ninian accepts and he takes her in his arms as the group leaves.
This ending makes Ninian one of the three candidates to be Roy's mother in Fuuin no Tsurugi, the others being Lyn and the Pegasus Knight Fiora.
[edit] Nils and Ninian as units
Ninian belongs to the Dancer class, and Nils to the Bard one. This makes them supportive units, who cannot fight on their own yet are able to refresh and replenish others in two ways:
- By using a simple dance/song, Ninian and/or Nils can 'refresh' an unit and allow him/her to have another chance to attack/heal/etc.
- By using a dance/song enhanced by magical rings, they can 'bless' the unit. It won't move again in that turn, but in the next one their stats will be temporarily raised.
Note that, in either of Lyn's paths (Normal and Hard), Nils can only refresh and not bless others since he's not equipped with any rings.
In addition to being supportive classes, both siblings posses notably high Luck and Speed, allowing them to avoid several of the attacks targeting them.
Story-wise, Nils and Ninian are introduced in Lyn's mode, namely the chapter "Siblings Abroad". Only Nils is playable right then, and he stays with the group until the end of Lyn's mode.
Ninian returns as an NPC during chapter 17 of Eliwood's mode/18 in Hector's mode, "Pirate Ship". Nils does likewise right after Chapter 19/20, "Dragon's Gate". Ninian will become a playable character in Chapter 20/21, "New Resolve FOG OF WAR" and stay around until episode 27/29 "Cog of Destiny", to be replaced by Nils from then on.
