I've got a new tool in the form of the National Climatic Data Center's Java NEXRAD Tools ([1]). This page is to let other user's request me hunt for specific images in the NEXRAD database. Hurricanes, tornadoes and other things affecting the United States can potentially be found. I can use this to obtain a wide variety of radar images in the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam since the mid-90s (precise start depends on location). However, as the database is incomplete I can make no ironclad promises.

All these images have been obtained (or could be obtained) using the software:

[edit] Instructions

You can either download it and figure it out yourself, or "order" from me. In all cases provide the date and place you want imagery of, and preferably a description of what you want "Hurricane Rita making landfall" for example. With hurricanes that will probably be sufficient. However with tornadoes and other transient events, I need a location as well as a time. The more detail you provide, the more likely I am to be able to find what you are looking for.

Aside from what you want an image of, there is flexibility in what the image can be. For a start, you can have an animation or a static image like above. In addition there is a great deal of flexibility in the background. You can have:

  • A black background with a few lines on it (like most of the example images).
  • A map background, like in the 9/11 pic.
  • A Blue Marble background, like what is used for the TC tracks (note this is no good for anything much smaller than a hurricane).
  • A relief map, like in the Katrina animation.
  • You can also get a series of rather strange backgrounds (but only if you are User:Nilfanion :P )

There are also a number of different data types available.

[edit] Requests

An image of The 2006 tornado in Florida, which happened on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, at Daytona Beach, Florida. Preferably with a map background, and maybe make it an animated GIF. When the request is done, just place it under completed images. Thanks. Hope you're not too busy. I could use it for an article. AstroHurricane001 23:24, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Completed images

An animated GIF of the 9/11 smoke plume, from formation to dispersal. [ælfəks] 15:23, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Done - Well from 12.16 to 7.28 which is as best as I can produce from the data...--Nilfanion (talk) 03:03, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
