[edit] Playing career

Niko graduated from Avon Old Farms in Avon, Connecticut in 1998. He was first introduced to Hockey at age four by his uncle and has loved it ever since. He played for the University of Maine Black Bears for four years. Niko was drafted 155th overall (5th round) by the San Jose Sharks in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Niko was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers on March 9, 2006.

On October 18, following a 9-1 loss against the Buffalo Sabres, Flyers assistant GM Paul Holmgren announced that Niko and two other teammates, Petr Nedved and Nolan Baumgartner, would be waived and he and Nedved would play for the Philadelphia Phantoms.[1] He also said that it is unlikely either of them would be called up to play for the Flyers again.[2] All three survived the waivers process.[3] He was loaned to the Chicago Wolves on March 1, 2007.[4]

[edit] Controversy

Many scouts believed that Dimitrakos career in the National Hockey League was over when he made a bad pass to RJ Umburger during the playoffs. The pass resulted in a concussion of his teammate. The OLN reporter stated, "Dimitrakos made a poor play. He put Umburger on the trolley tracks" referring to the vulnerability he placed his teammate in because of the bad pass.
