Niji Iro Tōgarashi (虹色とうがらし) is a manga by Mitsuru Adachi that tells about a place which was very similar to earth in the past but not earth. In this place, lived a young boy named Sichimi. After the death of his mother, Sichimi was sent to join his step brothers and sister from his father. He was surprised to know that each of them had different mothers but yet the same father they have never met. They lived together in a slum, eventhough apparently their father was pretty rich. Each one of them is different from the others. Sichimi, like most of the other family members are very good at ninjutsu, since he was raised in a ninja family. Since their characters differs very much, sometimes fights are inevitable. Not long after Sichimi's arrival, the siblings then decided to embark on a journey to visit the graves of their mothers. On this journey, they encountered too many dangers for a couple of kids who are just going to visit graves.
Niji iro tohgarasi has very minimum details in pictures and words. The plot is slow, like most of Mitsuru Adachi's work. The topic varies from sibling lives, court life, treason, to environmental conscious. Nevertheless, the manga tells a lot about Japan's culture in the past even if the mangaka insisted, that this is not a story of any place on earth.
The names are puns on Japanese spices. Tōgarashi is a Japanese seasoning made of chilli powder. Shichimi (the usual romanization, which here is Sichimi) tōgarashi is another Japanese spice. Niji iro means "rainbow-colored."
