Nigerian History
I've made a minor change to this section, as not all of the officers involved were Igbo (one of the "five majors" Ademoyega was Yoruba. I am considering more in depth alterations as some bits are misleading. For example Ironsi had nothing to do with the coup in 1966 and in fact, he actually put paid to the ambitions of the officers involved. There's more, but I'll work on a version with references and then submit it. Sorry, forgot to sign initially Sez who 03:05, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
Any chance of the lengthy history section being edited into subsections? It would certainly make it more readable. Having just recovered from the late arrival who thought Niger and Nigeria were one and the same [further up on this discussion page] I wondered if I was seeing things with the reference to banana kicking at the bottom of history section on main page! This is just trivia and non-encyclopaedic I would venture. freedom
- I made the changes myself in the end. I kicked out the banana reference - too weird to be able to substantiate. freedomAnnawright 17:11, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
Dahimeia / Dahomey?
I removed this from the article but thought it might be a valid point... "Nigeria was never known as Dahimeia. I think whoever provided this piece of information is refering to Dahomey, the old name for the republic of Benin, also a country in West Africa." Bubamara 02:40, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Nigeriaplanet.tk, nigeriaplanet.proboards43 and nigeria.tz4 external link
Nigeriaplanet.tk, nigeriaplanet.proboards43 and nigeria.tz4 are all the same site. AFAICT it was first added by an IP last April 2005. Right now, someone likes the link to remain on the article. I doubt my judgement, folks, so I invite you to visit it and decide yourself. Also, are the links to the photographs of the cities a quality resource? If you want a guideline, please refer to Wikipedia:External links.
If you want it out, then please remove the links after discussing it here. Note that having the links is the status quo, so stripping it without discussion might be called vandalism. Thanks! --Perfecto 00:50, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

- I am Nigerian, So I should know my country better than all of you, It is so unfortunity that in the 21 st century, we could still see racist in just an article. I wonder when you people would grow up. there are more fraud in USA , UK and Canada, than Nigeria.. The fraud part should be remove, And I am so disappointed that in the meta: of the page, Wikipedia would include fraud. America commit more fraud than Nigeria.. more murders.. more in Nigeria was 289 for a population of about 140 million, while Chicago , detriot, new york with less than 10 million had more than 5,000 murder. We I be correct to say that America is the MURDER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.On the issue of Picture , you people may what to know , what you see on CNN. Are film made about Africa in 70th. Most of the story are untrue and incorrect. story to please America and the white race, making black people look stupid. So the picture stay, to give a better information of Africa. and nigeria particular. Most of you that are racist see africa as a dark continent, but None of you who want to determine how this page should look like, have even been to Nigeria. Since I am a nigerian I represent the view of Nigeria, and how Nigeria should be seen from the world eye. our faith should not be determine by other who live in Canada like Prefecto, or Mikereichold. Wikipedia is about information, And Information is about CORRECT information . the picture Remain. Except if Wikipedia is another arm of the KKK.
A lot is said about hausa and yoruba. igbo as a tribe was just included as a minor. For your correction, igbo is one of the major tribe
DONT MIND ME. may be Igbo(12%) is not a majority. Na joke O. Half of the population of Nigeria are either Yoruba or Hausa.
- I don't really understand what the fuss is all about. I have just removed three links that simply weren't of any help to a general encyclopedic article on Nigeria (see Wikipedia:External links and What Wikipedia is not); one of them was the link after which this section is titled. I do hope that my removal of these links will not be construed as racism (because quite frankly, that would be ridiculous); and to the above poster I would like to say: let's cooperate to make this article better instead of calling each other names. — mark ✎ 16:21, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
- Like it or not, the Nigerian-based mail frauds are famous enough to deserve a mention, regardless of the existence of frauds from other places too. The place I live, Boca Raton, Florida, has mention in its article of being the location of many con games, frauds, and e-mail spammers; that's not something to be proud of, but it's a part of the town's reputation so it belongs in the article. *Dan T.* 02:12, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Expand
This article is one of the poorest country articles available. No history or politics summary and many poorly written sections. Please expand ASAP.--02:59, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
I would try to contribute more on history and politics. thank you.
I remove the expand because their is a link for politics and history, which I would post information to
yea im nigerian and this is a disgrace for a country page!!!! worst one i seen so far :-(.... Never talked on a talk page so i dunno wut im suppose to do wen im done,it says i aint logg in either so i'll just sign my name....
i really like nigeria.
Please help with this!
The problem of scarce Africa material on Wikipedia isn't in doubt – it's the solution that can't be forced, not overnight. The US gets far more coverage because there are zillions of Americans adding (often junk) to Wikipedia. Nigeria has few contributors, with less internet access, and needs all the writers it can get. So if you don't like what's here, please, ADD SOME YOURSELF!
Also look at Wikipedia:Africa-related regional notice board for more areas to contribute. One day Wikipedia will far outstrip other reference sources on Africa, because it's written by Africans :-) JackyR 17:05, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
Demographics
Where is Nigeria's demographics??
- At Demographics of Nigeria JackyR 13:07, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Alternate article outline proposed
I think the general outline plan of country articles in Wikipedia is not intuitive and not well organized. I think the basic outline could be much improved by using this outline, in summary: keep history first, make objective sections next (geography, population); political-economic sections next; and, cultural etc. sections last. What do you think of this new outline scheme? I'm trying it out here first, among all countries, for comment. Feel free to revert if you think this is not helpful or needs some discussion. Withdrawing, hope others will take it over
I'm taking this article off of my watchlist, as I don't like the atmosphere resulting from the harassment and personal attacks by Peter Henry (talk • contribs) and Nigeriamajor (talk • contribs), most probably one and the same user. I do hope that other admins will take this up, but I for one am not going to devote more of my valuable time to it. — mark ✎ 13:32, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Administrative Divisions
Introduction to Comparative Politics, 3e, (Kesselman, 2004) says on p.541 that Nigeria "features...774 local government units," not the 500-some currently stated in the article
GDP per capita
Nigeria's gdp per capita is given as $1000 so it could not possibly be ranked 213th in the world... according to the article on gdp,Nigeria seems to be ranked between 160-170.Tanzania's GDP per capita has been given as 611 in the article on Tanzania, whereas its rank is given as 165....how is this possible?
Sorry but when you talk about Nigeria's GDP, are you referring to the real GDP or Nigeria's PPP? (Tripol)
