[edit] Plot synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Sam and Dean are in the City of Milwaukee investigating a series of robberies carried out by longtime, seemingly loyal employees of the establishments who then commit suicide immediately afterwards. They interview Ronald Reznick, a security guard at one of the robbed banks. Ronald is a hyper-excited conspiracy theory geek, who tells the Winchesters that he believes the culprit is actually a Terminator like 'man-droid' that morphs to look like a human being. He shows them cctv footage of the robber and the brothers quickly realize they are looking at a shape shifter.

Sam and Dean go investigate a bank that they think is the next target of the shifter. While they are checking the security cameras for eye flares, Ronald arrives with an automatic rifle to hold up the bank in a misguided attempt to capture the supernatural criminal. Dean convinces Ronald that he is on his side and helps herd all the other hostages, including Sam, into the bank's vault. Sam meets Sherri, a tall blonde bank employee, who gushes about Dean's supposed heroic confrontation with Ronald.

Dean and Ronald discover that the shifter the brothers spotted on the security cameras has shed his skin and they are no longer sure who it is mimicking. In the meantime, the police arrive to surround the bank and cut off the power. Ronald allows Sam to be let out and Dean finds a dead body hidden in the ceiling in one of the offices. The shifter is now a black man who attacks Dean while Sam is helping an ailing hostage out of the vault. The shifter escapes into the banking hall with Ronald charging after him. Caught in the crosshairs of police snipers, Ronald is shot dead.

While Sam chases the shifter, Dean lets the sick hostage out the front door and is caught in the full glare of police and news channel spotlights. FBI Special Agent Victor Hendrickson arrives on the scene to take over command of the operations. Hendrickson is an aggressive, uncompromising man who is convinced that Dean and Sam are the deadliest criminals in modern US history. Over the phone, he tells a bemused Dean in no uncertain terms that he will get the brothers dead or alive.

The shifter has moulted again. Sam finds the dead body of a half-clothed Sherri in an office. The Winchesters let the live woman out of the vault but Sherri faints when she sees her own corpse. The police SWAT team enters the bank and while the brothers are distracted by the noise of smashing glass, the 'dead' Sherri assaults Dean before escaping yet again.

The shifter plays hide and seek with Dean while two SWAT officers apprehend Sam. The younger Winchester counter-attacks and quickly dispatches his would-be captors by knocking them unconscious. The shifter jumps Dean who struggles with it before finally killing it with a silver blade.

Agent Hendrickson and his men search the whole bank for the brothers but some quick thinking by Sam enables the Winchesters to escape dressed in full SWAT gear. Bemoaning their new fate as prominent nationwide fugitives, Sam and Dean peel away in their eye-catching and highly recognizable mint condition 1967 Chevy Impala.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Production notes

  • When Sam and Dean question Reznick, he holds up a copy of Fortean Times, a monthly UK magazine devoted to anomalous phenomena—specifically, issue #209, from May 2006. The "mandroid" on the cover is actually a 2006-style Cyberman from the popular BBC television series Doctor Who; their parallel-universe "birth," as promoted on the Fortean Times cover, was portrayed in the episodes "Rise of the Cybermen" and "The Age of Steel", from May 13-20, 2006.
  • Dean mentions the Terminator from T2 as a comparison to the "mandroid".
  • Dean refers Sam to Agent Johnson as to the lead agent from The Matrix Reloaded
  • The FBI agent refers to Sam as Bonnie and Dean as Clyde.
  • The FBI badges Sam and Dean show to Reznick identify them as Han Solo and Jack Ryan.
