[edit] Overview

In 007: Nightfire, James Bond is pitted against megalomaniac Raphael Drake, the world's largest green-industrialist and the president of Phoenix International. The goal of Phoenix International is to rid the world of unnecessary nuclear weapons and power plants to cleanse the environment. However, Phoenix International is soon suspected to be connected to the theft of a ballistic weapons guidance microchip that was meant to be part of the USSWP, or the United States Space Weapon Platform. When Bond starts to investigate the Japanese branch of Phoenix International, he learns of the true purpose of the international corporation: to carry out a decades-long, secret operation codenamed "Nightfire" that when completed will drastically redraw the lines that separate the countries of the world along with their governments, and plans to take over the world by taking control of all global corporations.

It was followed in 2004 by Everything or Nothing, this time developed and published by Electronic Arts.

[edit] Plot Summary

007: Nightfire begins in Paris, where James Bond is aboard a helicopter, protecting French DGSE agent: Dominique from terrorists via sniper rifle who plan to set of a bomb during the annual new years celebration. Bond disarms the bomb aboard a truck by firing an EMP missile into it.

After a night of passion with Dominique, bond is sent to the Manor of Raphael Drake in Switzerland. Drake is the head of Phoenix International, a multimillion dollar corperation which helps dismantle nuclear weapons and protect the environment. His mission involves investigating an exchange of a stolen microchip used to activate the U.S nuclear missile defense platform in outer space. Bond infiltrates the manor, disguised as a party goer and rendezvous with Dominique and former lover Zoe Nightshade. Bond then photographs the exchange of the microchip and escapes from the manor with Nightshade in a cable car where he then boards a snowmobile, shooting down a helicopter piloted by Drake's security chief Armitage Rook. Bond then uses the snowmobile to board his customized car and fend off drake's henchmen.

MI6 then sends Bond to Japan to protect Alexander Meyhew, a Phoenix security executive who promises to provide information on Phoenix's operation, codenamed: Nightfire, in exchange from protection from drake whom he believes will kill him for his failure to satisfy him. Bond manages to extract Alexander Meyhew from his home and eliminate the Yakuza assassins summoned by Drake to kill him, but Meyhew is killed by a ninja who bond ultimately defeats.

Meyhew uses his last words to tell bond of important information stored in a computer terminal in the Phoenix headquarters. With the help of Meyhew's bodyguard Kiko Heyashi bond manages to infiltrate the building and extract the data, but he is ambushed by drakes private military commandos and is forced to parachute from the top of the Phoenix building to escape.

The information on the computer leads bond to a nuclear power plant on the coast of Tokyo where Phoenix is cleansing the plant of hazardous nuclear material, but Mi6 suspects drake his his own agenda involving the plant. Bond infiltrates the plant where he fights several snipers, and escapes with Kiko in a helicopter. Kiko then shoots bond with a tranquilizer gun and takes him to the roof of the Phoenix building where he witnesses Kiko kick Dominique of the building. Bond escapes fights hsi way through Phoenix commandos into the lobby where an Australian agent named Alura Mcall drives her car through the windows and takes bond to safety.

Bond and Alura use Bonds car to enter the ocean near Drake's private island as it is submersible. They discover that drake is stockpiling nuclear weapons underwater and succeed in destroying them. They hijack one of Drakes assault vehicles and eventually locate an entrance to drake's secret underwater base where he plans to launch shuttles full of armed astronauts to take the missile platform by force. Bond tells Alura to stay near the entrance and keep in touch using the nearby communications equipment before heading into the base where he disables the bases security systems and kills a revenge seeking Rook (who blames bond for the disfiguring of his face from the helicopter crash) and his men who ambush him as he makes his way to shuttles where he sends Kiko falling into the launch pit, incinerating her as the shuttle launches.

In space, bond fights off drakes forces nad uses a laser gun (Which he obtained from Rook) to destroy the launching gantries sending the missiles off course. The station the explodes due to a malfunctioning laser which Drake used for defense and Bond finds himself up against Drake. Bond kills Drake, sending his laser burnt body whirling towards the earth's atmosphere. Bond manages to return to earth using one of the badly damaged space station's scape pods.

Back on earth, Bond and Alura head underwater in the exotic car and the camera pans towards the sky.

[edit] Weapons

Overall there are many weapons that the player can carry including grenades of various sorts and other types of explosives. In addition, there are numerous amounts of mounted weapons found throughout the game. To avoid copyright, names of the weapons were changed, which differed between the console and PC versions. Some weapons appear in the console version but not the PC version, and vice-versa.

[edit] Pistols

  • Wolfram PP7 (Walther PPK, Standard-issue 7.65mm handgun with a 7-round magazine. One of the most accurate weapons in the game. Alternate fire attaches a silencer to the gun. A golden version can be unlocked, doubling damage. Console version only.)
  • Wolfram P2K [weapon_pp9] (Walther P99, a 9mm handgun with a 16-round magazine, significantly larger than that of the PP7's. It is also twice as powerful as the standard PP7, but retains the PP7's accuracy. A golden version can be unlocked in console version only, doubling damage again.)
  • Kowloon Type 40 [weapon_kowloon] (Glock 17, a 9mm sidearm carried by many henchmen. Has an 18-round capacity. Alternate fire activates a 3-round burst mode, sacrificing accuracy for a higher rate of fire. Can also be wielded akimbo in console multiplayer only.)
  • Kowloon Type 80 (Glock 18, a fully-automatic variant of the Kowloon Type 40. Console version only. [Unlocked after beating the game, this variant fires full-auto only].)
  • Raptor Magnum [weapon_raptor] (Desert Eagle. In the console version, there are two variants: a .357 Magnum variant with a laser sight and 9-round capacity, or a .50 AE variant with a 7-round capacity, but larger firepower. Activating the laser sight sacrifices rate of fire for greater accuracy. In the PC version, has a 9-round capacity of .50 caliber bullets.)
  • Golden Gun (A single-shot handgun with incredible accuracy and power. Anyone struck by its golden bullet will instantly die. Console version only, only in Multiplayer.)

[edit] Submachine guns

  • Storm M32/Storm M9-32 [weapon_mp9] (Ruger MP9. A 9mm fully automatic machine pistol with a 32-round magazine. Alternate fire activates semi-automatic mode for more accurate fire. While the Storm can fire rapidly, it suffers from poor accuracy and damage. In the PC version, a silenced variation is also available. [weapon_mp9_silenced])
  • Deutsche M9K (Heckler & Koch MP5K. A 9mm submachine gun with a 21-round magazine. It's more accurate and powerful than the Storm, but it has a lower ammo capacity and rate of fire, limited to 3-round bursts. Alternate fire attaches a silencer. Console version only.)
  • Munitions Belga PDW90 [weapon_pdw90] (P90 - PC version only.)

[edit] Rifles

  • Winter Tactical/Covert Sniper Rifle (Accuracy International AWM. A bolt-action sniper rifle, has a 5-round capacity and a scope. Fires .300 sniper rounds. A silenced Covert version is available in the console version. Extended magazine of 10 rounds available.)
  • Suisse SG5 Commando (SIG 552. There are two different variants in the console version: a silenced version with either 3-round bursts or laser-sighted single shots, and a scoped version with either full-auto or laser-sighted 3-round bursts. Fires 5.56mm rounds from a 30 round magazine.)
  • Advanced Individual Munitions System AIMS-20 (XM29 OICW - Console version only. A dual-purpose experimental weapon. Primary fire is a rifle firing 5.56mm rounds in 3-round bursts from a 30-round magazine. Secondary fire is a semi-automatic 20mm grenade launcher loading from a 6-round magazine. A thermal scope may be used for more accurate targeting.)

[edit] Explosives

  • Flashbang Grenade- Temporarily blinds enemies for a few seconds, disabling their vision/hearing.
  • Fragmentation Grenade- Basic explosive grenade. Has a large splash damage radius.
  • Smoke Grenade- Produces a cloud of smoke that upsets enemy aim and cloaks movement (console version only).
  • Satchel Charges- A timed plastic explosive that can be stuck to any surface. (console version only)
  • Remote Mines- A small anti-personnel device that sticks to any surface. Switch to alternate fire to select the detonator; this will trigger any mines you have planted. (console version only)
  • Laser Tripmine Similar to Satchel Charges, but is a laser-activated bomb that explodes when someone crosses its beam.
  • Militek Mark 6 grenade launcher (Milkor MGL. Drum-fed weapon firing high-explosive grenades on an arcing trajectory. Alternate mode sets grenades on a timer)
  • AT-420 Sentinel Laser-guided/AT-600 Scorpion Heatseek (M202 FLASH. The Sentinel is a laser guided module military missile launcher that rapid-fires unguided missiles. Alternate mode allows manual guiding of a single missile to a target. The Scorpion exists only in the console version and fires heatseeking rockets rather than guided rockets.)

[edit] Miscellaneous

  • Frinesi Auto 12 Shotgun (Franchi SPAS-12. A 12-Gauge combat shotgun with an 8-round magazine. Primary fire cycles shells with a pump action. Alternate automatic mode is faster firing, but increases shot spread.)
  • Korsakov K5/Seamaster UP44 (Heckler & Koch P11. A multi-barreled pistol with a 5-round capacity. Fires a powerful sedative-laced dart capable of tranquilizing an opponent. It's also the only firearm that can be fired underwater.)
  • Phoenix Samurai Laser Rifle (Futuristic laser weapon.) Experimental Phoenix weapon that must cool down if it overheats. Primary fire launches single laser beams. Secondary fire activates Overcharge mode, which causes massive damage but instantly overheats the weapon.
  • Delta Repeater Crossbow (A pump-action sniper crossbow with a 3-round capacity and a scope. Bolts arc over distance, making aiming difficult. Console version only.)
  • Phoenix International X6 Annihilator (Resembles a magazine-fed gatling gun - PC version only.)
  • Oddjob's Hat- When Oddjob is selected as the player character in console multiplayer, Oddjob's hat is available for use as a weapon. The hat kills any enemy in one hit, locks on to an enemy, but it has a very slow rate of fire.

[edit] Gadgets

  • Car Key Stunner - Discharges high voltage electrical current that temporarily knocks out opponents. Disguised as a car key.

[edit] Trivia

  • Nightfire was the first James Bond video game to have its own original theme song,"Nearly Civilized" performed by Canadian trip-hop vocalist Esthero.
  • The game is also the first Bond video game sequel, as it features several characters introduced in the previous game, Agent Under Fire.
  • If one looks closely at the castle guests on the second level, it's possible to notice they are actually characters from the previous game Agent Under Fire. The men are the old James Bond faces, and some women look like Malprave.
  • On the "Deep Descent" level, there is a ship that the player can use to hide from a submarine. That ship has the name Malprave Industries, which is also from the previous game Agent Under Fire. (Console version only)
  • A movie trailer of Die Another Day can be selected at the options menu. (Console version only)
  • In the P.C , mission, Zero minus, in one of the security rooms near the broken elevator, there is a locker that takes a while to open. Inside should be some explosives and a poster of Kiko with "Love Kiko, xox" written on it.

[edit] Modding

Though the game has dwindling popularity in its online community, avid players of the game still work strenuously to create mods for the PC version. The game itself, being based on the Half-Life engine, is highly extendable, however due to apparent copyright issues and rather poor programming, it is unnecessarily difficult to do. One thing that does help is map textures, as well as frontend material and the HUD, are stored in standard PNG image format, with support for alpha transparancy, as opposed to being stored in WAD files as BMP images with pure blue symbolizing transparancy. But these textures, along with everything else in the game, are stored in an "assets.007" file containing all the maps, frontend material, sprites, etc. as well as textures. The whole archive must be decompressed to effectively make a mod, which takes up a substantial amount of disk space.

However, this has not deterred the hard working modders. Most impressive is their research into the .BSP map files of the game. Since compilers were completely unavailable at the time, they did extensive research and determined that hex editing a level from scratch would be absolutely impractical. Instead, they started work on their own compiler and packed all the textures into a WAD file for use with Valve Hammer Editor. The status of the project as of yet is unknown, and presumed canceled as a working compiler, along with the long-lost GearCraft Lever Editor, was discovered and is in wide use today. GearCraft, being the actual level editor used by Gearbox Software to create the original maps for NightFire, is a far superior choice to Hammer for making maps for the game, especially since it will read the textures straight from the game folder rather than having to use a WAD and all the conversion needed in the .MAP file for it.
