written by SULAIMAN GBADAMOSI lagos state is the most populous state in nigeria, the reasons for this is because the "city of excellence" as it is popularly called by indegenes was formerly the nations capital, due to this, the state attracted the first sets of major infrastructure like international seaport, airport, banks etc thus becoming the commercial centre of the nation.Therefore it is observed that even after the capital was transfered to abuja , lagos has retained its strenght numerically due to the presence of major commercial establishments.
kano was the centre of groundnut production in the 60s and 70s, it is home to one of the nations international airports and home to one of the ealiest train stations and university (Bayero university, Kano).However, it is worthnoting that even prior to the presence of these infrastructures in the state , the state has had a very large population due to being the center of islamic culture in Nigeria. All these reasons have collectively made kano state the second most populous state in Nigeria
Ibabdan,the capital of Oyo state was the capital of the defunct western region.It is therefore the regional political centre.the economic power of the region derived from cocoa helped in building major infrstructures many of which were cited in ibadan like the first university in the country (university of Ibadan) , the first radio station in west africa (now NTA) , and the first stadium in the country (liberty stadium) . "The pace setter state" have managed over time to retain its political and economic relevance even till the present day and this amongst other reasons have gone along way in accounting for the high population in the state.
Coming closely behing Oyo state is Kaduna state , which can simply belikened to lagos state in the north.The relatively high population in Kaduna state can be attributed to the presence of manufacturing industries and commercial outfits.
Various other reason account for the high or low population densities in different states some have had increases in population over time due to citing of new infrastructures in those states,and improved condition of living while others have remained sparce in population either due to environmental deterioration , wheather and or mal-administration.
