[edit] India town bot
Nichal, I have not been able to find a formula to calculate the x and y pixels for the locator. Shall I run the bot without them? We can put the locator values in manually. The bot can still add the map to each article. Please advise. - Ganeshk (talk) 23:35, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, thanks for the congrats. I was honored to have my RFA supported by the most established and respected Indian wikipedian around. I can only hope to live up to your high expectations and trust. :-) Take care. Saravask 08:03, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Ahmedabad peer review
Ok. Have started the peer review. I will tackle the issues you mentioned on the talk page. I know I still have a long way to go as the article needs to compete with Mumbai, Chennai and more recently Kolkata. Am enjoying all the work!! - Aksi_great (talk) 15:03, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- "deep review later?"!!! Then what was this? :) Thanks a lot. I now realize why some say that you can single-handedly work magic on an article. - Aksi_great (talk) 15:31, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bias in South Asian Studies
Regarding your vote on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bias in South Asian Studies, I have since changed the article, and IMO there is room for much further improvement. Your suggestion to merge the article is reasonable, however the subject (and the article) is IMO big enough to merit its own article, but maybe with another title. Books have been written on this subject (e.g. Chakrabartis "Colonial Indology", see the Further reading section) that describe some of the aspects. However, the article would need some more improvement from dedicated wikipedians. --Sendrin 21:56, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

I got your message regarding moving the state maps to Commons. I just noticed that you had put up the blank locator map for FPC. I will wait for the FPC to close, update the states on the finalized map and then move them to Commons. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk)

It is animal instinct to stop drinking milk after the infant age. Only humans drink other animals' milk after the infant stage.'
I've added a "History of milk" section and "Milk and vegetarianism" section. Anonymous_anonymousHave a Nice Day 21:59, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- I found nothing great on the internet relating to the relationship between undeveloped countries and milk. Its a bit disappointing. Anyways I think that its a good idea for someone who knows something about this subject to contribute to the Milk article. Take care. Anonymous_anonymousHave a Nice Day 20:14, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi Nichal,
Can you upload a map for Bhavnagar (city in Gujarat).
I am trying to contribute to the article on that city and appreciate if you can help with the map.

[edit] Global Warming
Thank you so much for your comments on Global Warming, they were very helpful. I was wondering if you could be more specific about your comment about too many headers, which ones did you mean? I looked, but did not see any non-crucial ones, so your thoughts would be most helpful. Take care! Judgesurreal777 10:29, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bhavnagar - continued
Thanks for the info, I am quite new to Wiki and am not used to use the talks and other features often. Thanks for your help.
So currently, we wont be able to put up the map as I understand, would you let me know how can I keep my self updated on the availability of the maps then?
I have added four tilda at the end of the post, hope that is the right way of using it? If not, please pardon my ignorance.

[edit] Rani Mukerji
Hello, Nichalp,
I remember you protecting or rather un-protecting the Rani Mukerji article after a debate. Unfortunately, we still have problems over there: User:Shez 15 keeps adding information roundly rejected by every other editor and is currently trying to get User:Zora banned, since she has (rightly) reverted her/his edits. Things have been going on for months: if you check out User:Shez 15's contributions page, you will notice that he/she has been promoting Rani Mukerji as superior to all other actresses, by putting her on the top of every list, describing her as #1 actress on the Rani disambigation page and removing all hints that she may have not been the star in one of her movies, but rather a supporting actress. In my opinion, this is profilic, not neutral and some kind of promoting an actress, not to mention annoying. Several editors have tried to talk to Shez but to no avail: Check out the discussion page of Shez and the Talk page of the Rani Mukerji article. Currently, Shez is trying to convince people to leave the Mukerji article alone, since he/she wants to edit it alone. Maybe, you could warn Shez from starting edit wars or even ban him/her, because, to be frank: all this housekeeping the past months gets annoying and I'm not the only one who feels this way. If I'm breaching Wikipedia protocol or if there is another way to solve this, please, help me. I really don't know how I can stop all this, because Shez isn't listening. Best regards, --Plumcouch 13:21, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Khalistan
I have some issues with your suggestion to use "List of unrecognized countries" as a model for an article on Khalistan. In that list all the countries are ones with some type of control over their territory (example Ireland, Taiwan, etc.) which cannot be said to be true for Khalistan. Please look into this - maybe I am mistaken. --Blacksun 19:57, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rani Mukerji
Hello, Nicholas, thanks so much for helping last time, but ... it hasn't changed. Shez reverted my edits and User:Haphar's edits. It's gotten a tiny bit better, since s/he hasn't reverted the entire article, but still. And I'm afraid that list under her picture (movies she is famous for) will grow and grow and grow, since she has about four movies this year and some of them are likely to become successful. I tried to cut that list, taking out the movies were she plays a supporting role and one that wasn't successful, but Shez wouldn't let me. Also: if you have time, on the Ajith article is something similar going on. The article itself is a mess and User:Anwar saadat keeps reverting it when someone tries to remove the fangush. The discussion page is a battlefield. Best regards, --Plumcouch 10:01, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Regarding Wikipedia:Userboxes

[edit] Indian Institutes of Technology
Hi Nichalp,
I am back from my wikibreak and am able to provide substantial time for wikipedia. As you mentioned, you will take a final look before giving the green signal for the FAC. I am waiting for your comments before pushing it as a FA candidate.
Known issues (may or may not be critical to the FAC):
- Article is 48 KB long. Please tell if its critical or not.
- "Success Story" as section title sounds poetic. Can you suggest anything better?
- "Education" and "Culture and student life" may be considered long. I thought about summarizing them but could not decide what to leave. They aren't so big either to have an article about themselves like I did for History of IITs and Reservation policy in IITs and summarizing them.
- Some people had problem of "choppy prose" but I don't know if its solved as the article has been exhaustively edited after it.
Any more suggestions for development are also welcome. You may raise the issues at the article's talk page. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 18:06, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- I think we should name it "National and international recognition" or just "recognition" as it deals with both national as well as international recognition. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 09:14, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- Briefly responding to your comments...1)I had wikified all important date, but a a user came and unwikified them. I an add them if you wish, but I don't know how wikilinking "1 October" will help the reader. The issue was also raised in Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Bangladesh where I was told that the policy is against that. 2) I will try to reduce the page size further by creating another article about IIT students' culture and summarizing the content in the main article. If there's any more place where reducing flab is possible, do tell me. 3) I haven't been able to find reliable printed references for IITs. Few books have been written (like "The IITians" and "IIT:India's Intellectual Treasures") but they aren't considered very reliable and some even consider them fan material. In fact most of the things these books talk about is student life and not IIT in general. The article does in fact refer to some online versions of written references like the US House Resolution, India Today's Ranking, The IIT Act, World University Rankings, and Businessweek's Article "INDIA'S WHIZ KIDS — Inside the Indian Institutes of Technology's star factory" 4) The government is not reluctant to increase the number of IITs. In fact the government is going ahead with creating more IITs even though there's a lot of pressure from students and alumni to not do so. 5) Clarification required on pie graph of breakup of reservation. The reservation stands at 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST. Do you want me to show this or something else. 6) Picture of classroom can definitely be added. I may add a few taken by me if they are good enough. 7) Clarification on graph of rankings. Do you mean to track different IITs rank in India Today (or other magazines) as against year or something else. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 09:48, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

- I have wikilinked the dates. The debate over increase in IITs is discussed in detail in History of IITs, the summary of which appears on the main article. Any more detail will result in overloading of the already bulky page. Since it is refered to as main article, I don't think there would be any issues. I will try and put some suitable photo of a class in progress. The trouble is that all the photos I have are when the class is NOT in progress and hence all the students are seen grouping and staring at the camera. It is unlikely to have such a photo taken by a student unless the student tries to use the camera as a spy cam because the professors won't allow it. However, there's a silver lining. I can use a still from the CBS Documentary as Fair Use image as I can justify the unavailability of fair use image due to IIT policy. However, I would like to know if I can upload it as free/GFDL image as the original video is available freely on Google Videos. The graphs in BEST article are a good addition as they represent evolving data. But in IIT article its very simple - 15% and 7.5% and 77.5%. The pie charts will add little value to the already clear data. I can still add if you insist. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 12:38, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Category delete
Hi Nichalp -- bit of a messup, and I hope you can help. User:Siddiqui seems to have created Category:Mughal nobilty, but there is a spelling mistake in the name ("nobilty" in place of "nobility") and this was problematic. I created Category:Mughal nobility and moved pages there, but now find that categories are easier renamed than deleted (am I right??) but as all the work is done, can you just please delete the wrongly-named category page? Thanx very much. Regards, ImpuMozhi 23:33, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- Its OK, someone else seems to have done the needful. Seek wisdom from the ancients anyway: is there any way I can find out who obliges my requests for deletes? Regards, ImpuMozhi 01:27, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] On another note

[edit] Rani/Ash aka jumping the gun?
Hello, Nicholas, I'm hoping I'm not jumping the gun again. Anyway, User:Shez 15 has cleared several paragraphs of Ashwarya Rai's article. I asked him about it, but did not receive any answer. Also, he seems to have developed kind of a grunge towards actress Preity Zinta: he cut information about her that may indicate she's successful, out of Shahrukh Khan's article, while describing in his edit summary he did change something about production status. I'm not sure if this is important, but if you write one thing into your edit summary, but do something entirely else (he has done that before in Preity Zinta's article, citing changes in grammar, but really blanking things out), I can't even imagine what kind of housekeeping it would involve: one had to look at each and every article, just to check out things were really changed the way people describe it in the edit summary. Also, there have been several larger reverts and re-reverts going on in Rani Mukerji's article. I hope, I'm not exaggerate things and blow them out of proportion. Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know and thanks for your time. Best regards, --Plumcouch 12:32, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] About "About time"
Oops, sorry for the confusion caused. "About time" refers to the fact that I had already announced my inactivity/wikibreak on my user/talk pages almost a month back but waited for a month to see if I'll be still active. It doesn't appear that I'll find enough time before 2007, so my editcount(iti)s may be limited to 100-200 per month. Hence, I felt it was "about time" to move myself to inactive members. btw, don't see you much on WP:PINQ. --Gurubrahma 17:46, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] New locator map
Hi! What about the new locator map? It is in Mumbai for some days now. Should we put it in other articles? Or wait for further improvement? Is there any page where the process of locating is described. (Your short description of the process, probably in GaneshK's talk page, were almost Greek to me!). [edit] "Main articles" in Ahmedabad
All sections in Ahmedabad currently have Main article: _________ red links (which look really bad). Is it necessary that any/all sections must have main articles for FA? - Aksi_great (talk) 13:35, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
- Ok. I will try and make those articles as soon as I can. I saw those pictures as soon as you put the notice on A'bad talk page. I already put the image of the Teen Darwaja on the page Ahmedabad's Darwajas. Also, I think that Image:Mills-Ahmedabad.jpg is incorrectly named. That is actually a pic of the Ahmedabad Thermal Power station if I am not mistaken. Do you have a better pic of that? It is really a majestic structure. Also, what do you think about the post-independence history now? Do you think it needs more details? I have tried to mention all the four important event - nav nirman, anti-reservation riots, earthquake and godhra riots. Any more details on them would make the section very long. - Aksi_great (talk) 19:01, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
- I still haven't got around to economy. Did the sports section, put up the religion figures and wrote a short paragraph describing the old and new city. - Aksi_great (talk) 08:46, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Dilbert-IIT
Raul, you'd uploaded this image: Image:Dilbert IIT.jpg. It's very compressed and ugly. Is it possible for you to get a .png version instead? (Plz reply on my talk) =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:05, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry, it is not possible - I found that one on google images. It's too bad - I was actually looking for the one where Asok says he'll refrain from gratitious uses of his mental powers, like heating his cup of tea by holding it against his forehead ;) Raul654 15:18, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Shez 15
Hello, Nicholas, I noticed you blocked Shez 15. Do you still need diffs of his actions? I'd go and look for them, if you want, no problem. Best regards, --Plumcouch 19:34, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Regarding Photos
You have weird ideas. Trying best to get me kicked....:D Anyways, now being in final year, I don't have the stereotyped big classes. You will be surprized to know how small some of our classes are. Anyway since I remember that I have just come back from a wikibreak (the reason for which was my exams), I am not having any classes now. I will ask some of my friends if they have taken any spy photos or not. If nothing works, I can always cry "FAIR USE". It looks like perfect case of the tag as I can claim that free alternative is not possible to have legally (unless someone is ready to get kicked out). Some more improvements are also going on in the article. I have summarized the culture section and article is now under 45kb. I am clueless where else to reduce the flab from. Hopefully by the time you review it, the photograph and the size issue will be resolved. God knows how many more {{main}} I have to use. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 20:23, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] border issues and coloring
Thanks for responding. I still find some things about it problematic:
- (minor) The two tiny disputed area 1 regions with the dash-dot lines on the inside and the undisputed line outside have smaller dash-dot lines than everywhere else.
- Near the top, by the small section of undisputed border, the color regions and the line borders do not match up. There is some disputed area 2 coloring in what, from the lines, looks like part of disputed area 1.
- The internal pure-dot line near the top does not seem to demarcate any separate region, based on the colors, and appears to be completely inside the rest of the claimed by India regions, based on borders.--ragesoss 06:37, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- I still don't understand the internal pure-dot lines. Shouldn't that pure-dot line that is the defacto India-Pakistan boundary be dash-dot? Good job with the other fixes, btw.--ragesoss 15:47, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian cities
Hi. I made some changes to Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian cities without consulting in the talk pages. Introduced a new section on "Articles under Peer Review" and also added further info on Inline Citation styles, References, Template Indic text. I was thinking to add that, if needed, something like "Urban Structure" may be added to "Geography". Please see the changes I made, wheter those are ok. Ans also see if adding Urban structure would be ok. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:23, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Since ypu seem to be online, a question. It is mentioned in the "geography" to add the info if a city is in an earthquake prone zone. Mumbai and Darjeeling have this info. Howevr, there is no wiki article on the seismic zone classification by Bureau of Indian Standards. So it becomes defficult to, say, "seismic zone 2" etc. IMO, we should have an article. I could find some info on the classification in the web, but mot really much. Do you know? If you are busy, I can go on to create the article. But with my present resource, it would just be a respectable stub! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:38, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Well, it's not really related to Being Bold! As this is not just another article. It is a project page, and articles will follow the pattern. So it is better to consult before making major changes. I will again go through the project page and see if something more can be explained. However, I cannot but say, I do not like the regidity of this project. Of course, the project has proved beyond doubt its usefulness by producing so many FAs, still, it should provide the editors of city pages with a bit more flexibility. Like, see the page Kochi (India). There is a section on Education and Healthcare. Of course the Healthcare has to be removed acc to the project. However, mentioning a few health care institutions (which are not educational) would be good for the article as the city has notable institutions. IMO, we can introduce some sorta flexibility, keeping in mind, of course, that things do not get out of hand. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:49, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link on seismic zones. Yes it's common to see the seismic zones in newspapers. But I did not even have the idea that the classification is sololy Indian, and not universal. Anyway, I will later talk regarding flexibility. In a hurry now. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:09, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pie Chart on IIT Reservation
Hi Nichalp,
I have added a pie-chart on the reservation in IITs. Hope this was what you asked for. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 09:06, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- In response to your suggestions, I have added the image to enwiki. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Reservation_in_IITs.PNG needs to be deleted. I have added the figures on the pie-chart and I have used colours bright enough to blind a few. PS: Image:Composition of indias agricultural output in 2003-04.png in Economy of India requires similar changes. :D -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 13:04, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Consensus at Talk:Ajith
Hi Nichalp,
I have started a consensus on deciding the base version of the Ajith article. I just want to request that whatever the outcome of this consensus, be enforced by your approval (as bureaucrat). It would be much appreciated if you comment on the article's talk page.
Thanks
Srikeit(talk ¦ ✉) 10:31, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with the points stated by you. I don't intend to blanket-revert Anwar saadat's edits. My only intention was that to isolate & remove the pure hagiography & unencylopedic info from the article & establish a consensus to prevent them from being added again. Also he can't add the reverted info during the course of the consensus. Now if, after the consensus, he adds the same stuff again we can revert it without detailed explanation & if he persists then block him for violation of the consensus. I have therefore not removed much of the bias as it is mixed with some valid info. I was just trying to catalyse the cleanup of the article. Any new hagiography can be dealt with by the guidelines provided by you. Thanks. Srikeit(talk ¦ ✉) 12:01, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] India map discussion
Hi Nicholas, that's an impressive collection of barnstars you have there!
I hope I didn't offend you with my comments on the map FPC, and I apologise if I did. I see your point about getting the nomination 'validated' by everyone with an interest in the topic and it's a good argument. It's a pity that as a side effect it has attracted many support votes from inexperienced contributors to FPC who are basically supporting a single issue - the map's (undisputed) accuracy and clarity. That's not enough to make an FP in my opinion, as I explained in my vote.
I'll refrain from adding any reply to your reply unless you want me to, because I feel you deserve to have the last word on the subject!
Anyway, thanks for giving me the chance to respond personally here, and I trust there are no hard feelings. I am genuinely impressed by (and envious about) the volume and quality of your work, including the map!
