I'll address the comments you've left when it's not 10:30 in the night, and my mom is not telling me to go to sleep and I've not got a Social Science test the next day (incidentally Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India is a part of the syllabus, and so is World War II, and so is Geography of India, so I'm up "studying"). Good night!--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| r 3 $ |-| t |-|) 17:01, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] 1911 Encyclopaedia
Hi Nichalp, I sure would like to help, if you tell me how. I followed the link you sent me, but really cannot make out anything. Can you please clarify? Regards, ImpuMozhi 15:33, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
- OK, herz what I understand: someone has already created "red-links" named after each and every entry in the 1911 encycopaedia, and then interested editors go and create stubs for each of those, based on text taken from the online encyclopaedia. Am I right? It would help if you could take a minute to explain things.
- Is it the case that you got a work-group of Indian editors to do this work in an agreed, distributed manner? Are ALL the India-related stubs made? If not, I would like to be included. In all events, it would be nice if I could be included in any existing "India-group" anyway. ImpuMozhi 21:17, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi Nichalp, thanx for the info -- I'll keep an eye on the India noticeboard and help out with future projects. Take care, ImpuMozhi 04:53, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Awesome
I count fourteen barnstars on your userpage!! Awesome! And I suppose 'bureaucrat' is a step above admins?? Good for you, I'm totally impressed. ImpuMozhi 21:21, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
- Good to know -- I c u r from Bombay, I lived at Reclaimation for some years -- what about you? And which college, may I ask? Indians are incurably curious, and I am very Indian indeed in that respect. ImpuMozhi 04:53, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks, and FR again
Thanks for the wishes. The test went pretty well. Thanks for creating such a great article (though the major part of our syllabus was Rivers of India in which I had a major part myself). I have addressed some of your concerns, though there's still quite a lot left. I'll try to do the rest some time later, though it could take some time. Why don't you try to find out more refs (Google usually turns up lot of related results). I was hoping to get it featured before 26 Jan (so that I culd get it featured on Main Page) but that hope looks bleak now. --May the Force be with you! [edit] Responses (2 for now - more later!!!)
Nicalp:
My immediate grudge is against the removal of 2 items:
1. Reference to the large concentration of Indian skyscrapers in Mumbai as a sign of its pre-eminence as a commercial and financial center of the country. This should be included in the second para in a 1 liner, with a link to the main article in the context of Mumbai being the home of several MNC and Indian company HQs and the financial and business orgs in the city.
2. The seal of Mumbai is not the logo of BMC. It is the coat of arms of the city, and the seal of the governing body of the city. It is used in all official docs/ceremonies specific to Mumbai, and is the representative heraldic sign of the city. In that sense, it also "represents" the spirit of the city when Mumbai is to be represented in documents, conferences, meetings etc. It is the local eqv of the Lion Capital of Sarnath, which is the coat of arms of India, btw.

[edit] Dala Street
Hi:
Referring to Dalal Street as "the Indian Wall Street" is a common way of identifying the relevance of the institution for non-Indian consumers of Wikipedia knowledge. Whether we like it or not, the vast majority of people who consume info on the net (and this applies to Wikipedia too) are from NA or EU. Hence, a familiar frame of reference for such consumers is apt and necessary. Moreover, the elec media both in India and abroad continues to use this epithet time and again.

[edit] Inferior??? - what rubbish
Nicalp:
May be Wikipedia has an international audience, but it is still an encyclopedia - where people gain information/knowledge and assimilate it in reference to widely accepted standards. So for e.g., the size of the moon is ________, which is about ____ times the size of the earth. This gives a point of reference against some previously accepted standard.
Whether you like it or not, the Wall Street is still the standard bearer of Intl financial markets. May be Dalal Street has jumped 5000 points in 2 years, but people around the world still are unaware of its significance or even existence, simply beacuse this piece of information is usually skipped through for lack of a common, univerally accepted point of reference. And this applies to an audience in China or Japan, as much as it applies to audiences in EU or NA.
Referring an institution against a standard does not make it inferior in any way. Thats a negative mentality which is better off discarded.
And yes, Wikipedia is an American entity!!!! It conforms to American laws for copyright infringement, libel and such other cases.

[edit] Mumbai CoA
Hi:
I believe all coat of arms, logos and emblems may be used under the Fair Use clause of US Copyright laws, as long as the person uploading the image or Wikipedia releases all claims and gives proper credit to the organization being represented. This applies to flags and seals too.
Correct me if I am missing something here.

[edit] Political integration of India
Hi Nichalp - I wanted to first bring you up to speed with the changes I've made to the article:
(1) I incorporated most of your suggestions.
(2) I've edited the second half of the article to emphasize "Integration" rather than states creation or terrorism, so that its part of one stream of "political integration." I've summarized states creation and provided links to the daughter articles.
(3) I've reduced the length of this article by 5kb. It feels like a good, natural article to me.
Do you feel this article is ready for FA nomination? I respect your opinion and the fact that you have a lot of experience with FAs. user:Deeptrivia has advised me to be patient for a couple of days, and seek your counsel.

[edit] contradiction
hi:
you are contradicting yourself. you said:
Coat of Arms can be used under the fair use clause. But the statement as long as the person uploading the image or Wikipedia releases all claims and gives proper credit to the organization being represented. The person in question must be authorized by the company/organization that holds copyrights/trademarks to the logo. No organization releases their logos for commercial use. Wikimedia's logo is similarly protected.
Under the fair use clause, an encyclopedia like Wikipedia (which is a commercial for-profit org much like Encyclopedia Britannica) may use pictoral information like the CoA as long as it does not profit from it. Which means:
1. Wikipedia does not render the said image (logo, CoA, whatever....) on its web pages hosted on its server, in order to either (explicitly or implicitly) endorse or oppose the actions, deeds, thoughts, views, opinions or values of the orginaztion (or its members).
2. Having conformed to 1., Wikipedia does not profit from the information rendered on the web page (by accepting donations from a third party who may be inclined to donate to Wikipedia because of the perception that Wikipedia endorses or opposes the views, actions, deeds and values of the organization, as the case may be, for e.g.).
I dont think rendering an image violates either of the 2 terms. Moreover, all throughout Wikipedia, logos, CoA and emblems have been rendered under the fair use clause. The best ways is that the person uploading the image release all claims, and give proper credit to the authority by explicitly mentioning the name and contact of the entity holding the copyright.
Also about comparisons, please read my statement very carefully. I said - comparing against a standard - some piece of info which can be verified and is easily available. Whether we like it or not, info about NA and EU entities are more easily available on the net, or in books than, say, info about provinces in China and India. I know it sounds parochial, but I guess, once info about Indian or Chinese states become more easily available, even they could be used as a std. Till then, u gotta use whats available.

[edit] why british english?
any specific reason for preferring british english??? there better be a good one
Pizzadeliveryboy 16:31, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
PBD, Indian English spellings are based on British English (except is certain cases). Since Nichalp is Indian, its obvious that he'd write in BE. अमेय आर्यन DaBroodey 18:46, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
The reason Mumbai has to be in British English is because that's the official English 'dialect' or spelling used in India. Indian English is usually considered synonymous with British English. All pages related to India are meant to be in Indian English. See the Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#National_varieties_of_English Manual of Style for further details. [edit] SVG
I'm not ignoring your request about SVG's on the GTAW article, but I've realized that I don't know how to create them. I thought it could be done in fireworks, but now I can't find that option. Is there an easy way to do this? There are a couple diagrams on my newest FAC (Shielded metal arc welding) that I'd like to convert as well, so if you know of a way to do it, please let me know. Not all capital cities are using the relevant template - see Bhopal, lucknow....
Is there a way of making a field optional, so that specific items for Mumbai can be reflected from the india capital infobox?

Hello. You welcomed me as admin some time ago. [edit] Seeking guidance
I am seeking your guidance and advice on a particular issue. Mahuri page on wikipedia was initiated by me, and I have contributed to the page from time to time. As per policy of the wikipedia anyone can use the contents of wikipedia, but I understand that use of such contents should indicate the source, that is, the wikipedia. The contents of the page Mahuri have been used in the site mahurivaisya without giving any reference to wikipedia - though I am glad that they have used our contents. In this case, a problem may arise at a future date if that website takes a stand that the contents of page Mahuri on wikipedia have been copied from that site and thus violates copyrights. In an alternative scenario, a user here may tag our Mahuri page with copyright violation under the impression that our contents have been copied from that site, reference to which was given by me long back as an external link when that site was not active and having only a welcome page. Although I am not aware of any such issue, which wikipedians may have encountered in the past, I believe that such a situation may have arisen earlier too. I seek your advice and guidance to deal with this issue, which you are requested to kindly post on my talk page please. I also utilize this opportunity to say Hello to you. Thanks. --Bhadani 13:39, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
