If Major league baseball never introduced the wild card system and division realignment in 1994, this is the way the league championship series would have looked:

Note 1: ...not taking anything into account (e.g. 1994 strike, future unbalanced schedules, etc.)
Note 2: The projections are based on the guess that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays would have been placed in the AL East and the Arizona Diamondbacks would have been placed in the NL West.
Note 3: Actual LCS in parentheses {soon}
Note 4: Until 1998, the home-field advantage in the LCS was allocated on a rotating basis between the two (and from 1995 through 1997, among the three) division champions; since 1998 the team with the better record has had this advantage, except that in no case can the wild card ever secure the odd home game, regardless of regular-season records. --This is not taken into account, team with better record is the home team in the following projections.

! - Teams finished with identical regular season records

[edit] Og Research 2

Since the wild card format was first enacted in 1995, there have been several instances in which a team:

  1. 1. Had a better record than one or more teams from its own league that season

and

  1. 2. Because of the playoff qualifying format, that team did not qualify for the playoffs even though one or more team(s) with a worse record did qualify for the playoffs..

This scenario (a team not making the playoffs despite having a better record than another team from its own league that did make the playoffs) has happened only eight times in major league baseball history; all in the wild-card format era:

In every instance, this has occurred because a weak (record wise) division produced a weak division winner – thus a weak (record wise) playoff representative
