Nicolás Romero, México

Ciudad Nicolás Romero also know as Villa Nicolás Romero is the largest city and municipal seat of the municipality of Nicolás Romero in the State of México, Mexico. The city had a 2005 census population of 242,798 inhabitants, while the municipality had 306,516. The municipality, which has an area of 233.51 km² (90.16 sq mi), lies in the north-central part of the state, just northwest of the Federal District (Mexico City), and includes such other communities as Veintidós de Febrero and Progreso Industrial.
The town is named after Nicolás Romero, a liberal militar during the Reform War and the French intervention in Mexico. He was executed there by the French. The town changed its name in 1898 from its previous name of Monte Bajo.
The town was founded by Otomi and known during the Aztec rule as Azcapotzaltongo.
