[edit] Childhood

Nicky is the second eldest in the Wu family, with one older brother and one younger. When Nicky was young, people described him as very energetic, mischievous, and good at athletics. Consequently Nicky participated in Judo and Tae Kwon Do. His hard working efforts in these two sports earned him three black belts in Judo and five black belts in Tae Kwon Do. Moreover Nicky was the provincial Taiwanese Tae Kwon Do champion for three consecutive years. It seemed like Nicky's career as an athlete was inevitable until a chance of stardom struck upon him.

Furthermore, the multi-talented Nicky also earned awards in calligraphy, drawing, swimming, and essay-writing. Throughout the years, he was able to maintain in the top three of his class in terms of academics.

[edit] Rise to Stardom

In 1988, when Nicky was 17, he was spotted by an entertainment agent while working on a part time job. He was told to audition for the boyband Little Tigers Team. Initially Nicky refused, for he was more focused on developing his career as an athlete, but eventually they persuaded him to do so. As a result, Nicky was chosen along with two others, Alec Su and Julian Chen, to be a part of the Little Tigers Team. Nicky was given the name of "霹雳虎" in the band.

With the release of their albums "Happy New Year" (《新年快乐》) and "Leisurely Cruising" (《逍遥游》), The Little Tigers Team achieved instant success, and became pop idols overnight. During that time, their popularity succeeded all others Taiwanese artists, and created whirlwinds in Taiwan, Mainland China, and Singapore. The band's success probably began a new generation of Taiwanese pop idols, which led to creation of more boybands such as F4.

[edit] Going Solo

After selling millions of copies of the Little Tigers Team's singles and albums, the band was forced to break apart due to Julian Chen's compulsory military service. Nicky branched out into the entertainment industry by himself, releasing Mandarin and Cantonese albums with hit singles such as "Best Wishes to You" ("祝你一路顺风") and "Waiting Day by Day" ("一天一天等下去"). Going solo proved out be successful for Nicky Wu when he won the 1993 Best New Artist Award in Hong Kong and the box office success of the Tsui Hark movie "The Butterfly Lovers"( 1994), in which he starred as the male protagonist Liang Shangbo alongside Charlie Yeung.

Nicky also starred in dozens of other films such as "Love in the Time of Twilight" (1995), "Thunder Cop" (1996), "Never Say Goodbye" (2001), but none of these films were able to match the critical and commercial success of "The Butterfly Lovers".

However, Nicky's musical success earned him the title as one of Taiwan's four small heavenly kings along with Alec Su, Jimmy Lin, and Takeshi Kaneshiro, a title given to the four most popular teen idols during the 1990s.

[edit] Developing Further

With the broadcast of the TVB series "At the Threshold of an Era", ATV series "Treasure Venture", and Taiwanese series "Treasure Raiders" in mainland China, Nicky Wu achieved fame in mainland in the television industry. Since then Nicky has been getting mainland TV series offers while not giving up on film, recently starring in the highly budgeted film "A Battle of Wits" alongside Andy Lau.

[edit] Personal Life

Throughout the years, Nicky has been linked to many beautiful stars in the entertainment industry, including Taiwanese singer Vivian Hsu and Hong Kong actress Charlie Yeung. In 1999, Nicky was under heavy scrutiny for his much publicized romantic relationship with actress Ada Choi. The couple broke up in 2002, and Nicky began dating mainland actress Ma Ya Shu a few months later. This newly formed relationship had drawn criticism from the media, for Ma Ya Shu was regarded as "the third woman". However the couple dismissed these rumors, and was recently married in December 2006.
